Are we good at WR

Watch the kid from Central Missouri Warren. He is good. I thought he might go in the third or fourth round.

I can say this about the personalities of our WRs, first impressions, mostly. I got to speak with a few of them after a few OTAs last year. This might be interesting to some of you. It has no important content, just descriptions.

Armanti: Was overwhelmed. Told me that he never realized running routes was so complicated. Aside from learning the playbook, he was trying to learn to catch punts. This was before they threw the "Mountaineer" at him. He was overloaded, and I think they quit on him. Armanti is not a bust (too soon). A lot of folks want to hound him, but Fox did not like the pick, and when Armanti struggled to help Fox win NOW, he was shelved. I went to WCU, so this is hard for me to say:). Give him a chance. He is humble, hard-working, and determined. He was also (in June) overwhelmed and scared. Armanti is a country boy through and through, and you have to like his aw shucks approach to everything. There are not many players on the team who are better athletes than Edwards: Smith, Gettis stand out, and that is about it--he is quietly a very good athlete.

David Gettis: He was a nobody and being ignored, but I thought he looked pretty good in practice so I stopped him. I was very impressed with him. He is tall, lean. He looked me in the eye and everything was "Yes sir, No Sir". He was very determined, and told me that he was going to make the team. I didn't really believe that (We had Lafell and Edwards picked higher), but I liked him. Became a fan of his that day. I would not bet against David Gettis.

Brandon Lafell: THe opposite of Gettis. He was laid back, joking. My sons love him because he is very funny. He was ripping everyone around him to my boys, who were laughing hysterically. They were posing for a picture with CLausen and he ran up and gave JC the rabbit ears. Got the picture, but you cannot see the fingers. Very relaxed. I don't think he was as serious as he should have been, but that is his personality. I like to think that Gettis made him better. So, Gettis is serious and driven, Lafell is the Dave Chappel of the huddle. He is not a leader, but he probably relaxes his teammates. YOu need all kinds.

Just thought I would share what I know about them that can't be found on the internet.

I'm starting to feel that we are good at WR. Don't get me wrong, I would be more comfortable with an established vet as well but Gettis/Lafell has a season under there belt. That season includes a lot of good experience where they were able to step up and contribute in multiple games. I'd be approving of the following additions; a top CB and maybe a vet QB not named Delhomme.

We currently have Smith, Lafell, Gettis, Edwards and the Hawaii rookie. I can see all 5 of them making the roster if we don't sign anyone else. If we do, who do we cut? It seems awful early to give up on any of those first/second year guys, especially when they were kind of put through the ringer last year. Unless we get a great opportunity, I would stay with what we have and see what happens. We can always address the position next offseason should none of these guys step up.

I think we are fine at WR, but it would suprise me if we didn't grab a free agent on the cheap to give Cam another weapon. There are a lot of WRs waiting to get picked up. I would rather see us get a younger WR so he can grow with Cam and the rest of the team, but I wouldn't be upset if we grabbed Derek Mason.

Steve Smith...if he stays..and I hope he does

David Gettis...

Brandon Lafell...

Kealoha Pilares...

Armanti Edwards...

David Clowney...

Wallace Wright...

Charley Martin...

Trent Guy...

I've put my list in order of what I think. I only see us bringing in another WR is Smitty leaves and I think that we will switch between Lafell and Pilares at the slot position per matchups. I wasn't impressed with Clowney, don't remember much about Martin other than little speed and good hands. I recall Guy being impressive in Preseason but Fox never played him, soooo idk. Wright was decent a PR and Edwards is up in the air still.

What do you guys think?

Now we can add Naanee from the Chargers to our list of WR's.

Smith

Naanee

Gettis

Lafell/Edwards

Wouldn't be surprised if that looks like our receiver core, with Lafell and Edwards sharing time playing on the field. Or, possibly Edwards beats him out for the job, not better then the three guys ahead of him though methinks.

I hate to pee on everyone's corn flakes, but I'm holding out judgment on AE until after the pre-season. I'm not a hater and am patient in that he could still be a solid contributor to our WR core. I just can't help but remember the Jason Carter's and Kenny Moore's of TC that don't dazzle once Sunday rolls around. I do believe he can be our KR/PR this year and maybe hit the field as a #4/#5 WR in 2011, but I'd rather him continue to learn and not feel the pressure he did last year. I want AE and Pilares to be groomed for the future and not be overwhelmed with stuff flying at them and not being able to keep up. For me this season, I'm thinking --

Smitty

Gettis

Naane

Lafell

AE/Pilares

QUOTE=Zod;3232624]No, we are not good at WR.

At best we are mediocre at WR.

I think that we are far better than mediocre at WR, especially with Smith staying. We have other weapons now that will allow our other WR's, to get open b/c they'd have to play man or zone. No more or very, very little double team on
