NFL drops 3rd qb rule

I'm not seriously advocating AE as QB... But umm... I believe the dude does indeed have an arm, and he's obviously very fast... To me he makes more sense as the "wildcat" guy...

Even if not, throw a quick screen to him on one side and have Smitty streaking on the opposite side... Especially during a dominant performance from our running backs... Just have Smitty hold up for a second... Just long enough for his cover man to slow down... That's all she wrote.

Our offense is going to be sick regardless.... Smitty, LaFell, Gettis, AE, Shockey... Maybe even have a dual rb set with DeAngelo and Goodson running routes out of the backfield....

Who the FUG can stop that!?????????

Survey says... NOBODY!!

I'm far more concerned about filling holes and getting depth on the defensive side of the ball...

That will be the difference in us going to the playoffs or not.. Depth in D...

I don't know why you would use Edwards at all when you have a guy like Newton to run the wildcat package on every down. Plus the added bonus is that Newton can throw the ball and is your everydown guy not a gimmick that everyone has figured out how to defend.

The problem with the Wildcat is that unless you have a guy who is equally dangerous running or throwing, defenses can run blitz and pressure both the run and the passing options. If your quarterback has the ability to run and pass, as well as be elusive, then wildcat suddenly becomes a weapon. You can spread the defense out and overload points along the line to find creases as well as throw over the top if the safeties keep cheating in the box. If your tight ends can catch the ball as well, you have a pretty potent attack.

We will have Clausen, Newton, and a vet. Pike will go into camp but would have to play amazingly to be kept. At this point there is no way we trade Clausen so soon. He is cheap on a rookie contract so we will give Shula time to work his magic and see what happens. As for who will be the vet, we will know in a week or two.

I would only use Edwards if the first 2 qbs went down. Emergency. And Edwards is a passing threat--but how effective is the question. I suppose I am questioning this: WHy keep 3 QBs when you can keep 2 and have AE as a third option? I do not want my starting (future or present) QB running the Wildcat.

Seems to me that the last paragraph is false... If it's a rule specifically for a 3rd QB, then you would only be allowed to activate that 46th roster spot for a QB...

Can't see this rule being a loophole to activate another position... Otherwise they would have stated that the game day rosters now has 46 players...

That's just me though

I think they'd have to be independent of each other, that the 46th doesn't have to be used on a 3rd QB, since there are instances that teams only carry 2. Indy used to with Peyton/Sorgi, and after we released O'Sullivan last year we just had Rivers/Volek on our 53. If Brad Smith is retained by the Jets, they could conceivably do the same thing if they wanted/needed to, carry just Sanchez/backup as QBs and use Smith as 3rd string.

Correct me if I am wrong because I am not sure how this will be interpreted by individual teams, but this is only one way of approaching this rule. It seems to me that we are basically losing a roster spot, so we are more inclined to keep 2 QBs. Should they become injured, then going to the Mountaineer would be better than putting in another position player. In other words, the liklihood of losing 2 QBs during the course of a game are remote, but if we do, Mountaineer is the fallback plan.

You are right and that is exactly what it could mean--not disputing that. However, If we have 46 roster spots, I am not sure 3 QBs would be active. Unless they plan on giving Cam spot duty for a while. Am I missing a key point?

What I read is that by gaining a roster spot but eliminating the third down quarterback rule, teams can have 3 quarterbacks on their active roster who can play with no restrictions. It was changed to address the problem that Chicago had in the NFL championship game last year where they played Hanie in the third quarter so they had to go with him for the rest of the game, and if he was injured, would not have had a QB who could play.

Could teams only go with 2 guys and have a converted wide receiver or running back take over the emergency QB duties if necessary while using the spot for an extra guy at another position?? Of course you can do whatever you want. But in our (the Panthers) case which is what I was referring to in my post (on a panther message board), it will allow us to use Newton, Clausen and a vet interchangeably. Frankly Edwards could move from the receiver position to taking a direct snap without having to be designated as a third quarterback which requires you to deactivate him on game day. Now we get 3 active roster quarterabcks and we still have Edwards if we would have injuries to the first 3 guys. Could we use it instead for Lloyd or another position? Of course. But this gives us the best flexibility to have good quarterback depth on game day and allow us to run packages for each of them as the game situation arises without restriction.

Running the wildcat is not more dangerous than scrambling on a rollout or being sacked by a 300 lb lineman. Truth is that there are rules to protect the QB and they work running or passing the ball. Why have 3 active quarterbacks? If you do, you don't have confidence that you can get by without that many. Or that you have a consistent proven performer and might be rotating in guys looking for a winning combination. Then again with us, we struggle to keep guys healthy or at least have in the past.
