Elevators

I was riding in the elevator at work today. It was me and two women, and they were chatting away. When we were waiting for the elevator in the lobby, the women were speaking in full volume. When we got on the elevator, the two women started whispering to each other. I don't know whether they were being courteous, or if they honestly thought by whispering that I wouldn't be able to hear what they were talking about. They were just gossiping about other women they worked with that they didn't like anyway.

So as I left the elevator at my floor, I turned to them and asked "Were you whispering to be courteous? Or so I couldn't hear what you were saying? Because I could still hear everything you were saying." They just turned to me and shrugged, sort of surprised I asked. Didn't get an answer.

Definitely not the first time I rode an elevator where people went from talking normally outside to whispering inside. So what is it - courteous to whisper in an elevator or are you trying to conceal what you're saying?

if you talk on an elevator and think people can't hear you... you're a stupid.

talking loud in confined spaces is annoying. whispering isn't necessary though.

elevators are very over engineered. as long as the inspection certificate hanging inside one is current you are fine.
