Edwards to Carolina?

Chud was the tight end coach in San Diego, so why do people keep using that as an example of his emphasis on vertical passing? Am I missing something?

Go to Panthers.com and watch the video they put up today interviewing Chud and what he wants from the offense "attacking offense-vertically". I would post the video but I don't know how to on this forum so I will provide the link.

Also this was one of the first videos put out by our new coaching staff back when he was hired, this is the second time it's been placed in the rotation on the Panthers site.

Also to those doubting Pilares, what do/did you see out of a college QB that can even place him anywhere near a comparison to Steve Smith? If anything he's in the Josh Cribbs, Brad Smith class but smaller. Someone also mentioned Pilares as not physical (umm, he played tailback for a full season as Freshman), he's described as "fearless" over the middle, a polished route runner, we know he can catch (88 receptions) and if I'm remembering correctly he can power clean 310 lbs. and he's 5'10 200 lbs., Edwards is 5'11 182 lbs....I just don't see how you don't see more of Smith in Pilares vs Edwards smh. Now let me be clear I want both to succeed as they're on my favorite team!

how many times has Braylon had over 1000 yards in a season?

how many DUIs has Sidney Rice had?

how many teams has Braylon given up on?

how many times has Braylon had to catch passes from Tavaris Jackson and Joe Webb?

again, Fox believed in attack vertically as well most of his career in Carolina. What Chud did in Clev isn't drastically different.....they just went about it slightly differently.

There is a HUGE difference between being a RB and what being physical in terms of being a WR means. Pilares is suited for the dink and dunk of a passing offense......he doesn't do contact well down the field running route, isn't good at adjusting to balls, and isn't good working in traffic. Those are things Smitty thrives in like almost no other little guy I have watched.

also, Hawaii's offense

I saw the video, I am not saying he won't put an emphasis on going vertical. My point was people keep using San Diego as an example. How is San Diego an example of the offense he will run when he was the TE coach, not the offensive coordinator? Using Cleveland would make much more sense because he actually ran the offense there.

No way.....you don't draft a 5th round WR out of the Hawaii offense to replace someone who was one of the best WRs in the game for a period.

Pilares is quick and looks to translate into a slot position.....but isn't physical enough or good enough to think about Smitty's role in the NFL. I mean being small doesn't even come close to suggesting he could replace the role Smitty has occupied.

People keep talking about this kid but he will be lucky to make the active roster.....

Remember, I wrote "eventual" replacement and/or plan B in the event Armanti doesn't pan out.

I have to disagree with your assessment of Pilares being small and not physical enough. Here's a post draft video clip about him on panthers.com you may want to check out:

Dude is 5'10, 200 lbs (that's bigger than SS when he was a rookie) and was a TB before his conversion to WR. For a guy who's small and not physical enough, he's very strong (power cleans over 300 lbs) and has very good speed (4.1 at his pro day).

Do I think he'll be as productive as SS right away? No, but he has the skill set and athleticism to be a very good slot WR and another viable weapon in our vertical offense IMO.

There was nothing wrong with Fox's philosophy. It was the way the implemented it that was so horrible.

He did nothing to try and disguise our offense and had absolutely no problem with running our RB's into brick walls for 1 yard gains.

Not to mention he refused to use TE as a viable passing options, preferring to use TE and other WRs not named Steve Smith as extra OL. I think our offense will be similar to what we had under Dan Henning and/or the Wesley Walls era (with Shockey).

Kris Mangum was never a NFL TE.

He was for the panthers though.

being strong in the weight room and bring a RB has nothing to do with the art of being a physical WR......Pilares isn't one. Not something the Hawaii offense relies on

I agree he could be a good slot WR. Not sure he will be a vertical threat.
