dude... you just explained pretty precisely how my wife and i started out

in high school, she dated the assholes and douchebags with (their mommy and daddy's) money. she ended up dating a buddy of mine for several years. throughout this whole time, whenever she got treated like crap, i was that good guy that she came running to. that friendship grew and pretty much got to a place that you described throughout this thread.

she graduated a year before me, left my buddy around that same time and went off and did her own thing. once i graduated, i went and pretended to go to college. she was doing the whole college age partying thing, hanging out with that douchey crowd... and that was never my thing. we pretty much just fell out of touch at that point

2-3 years after that, i was still in an unhappy relationship with another girl from high school and she finally decided that she was done dating scumbags. she hunted me down through mutual friends and when she finally found me again, she just laid all of her feelings out there. in just a couple of days, i had broken it off with the girl i was dating and the wife and i officially started dating. ever since then, we've been together. got married in october and couldn't be happier. she's absolutely my best friend.

now... obviously several years removed from our high school days, we just look back and wish we hadn't been so retarded and just been honest with each other about how we felt about each other. while we both grew up A LOT during the time we fell out of contact, we could have bypassed a lot of bullpoo in our lives and been that sappy couple who runs around telling people that they're high school sweethearts. :D

there was a lot that we both needed to get out of our systems... which, if we would have been together, would have probably been pretty detrimental to our relationship

but, there were a lot of bullshit relationships in between that could have potentially been avoided in the process
