Seriously guys, the only argument for a rookie salary cap is "holy poo look how much money this guy is making!"

At what point do you start to reexamine your stance a little more critically?

I have no problem in general with a rookie making as much money as possible. However when used in the context that they are (after the first year) taking from a limited pool (salary cap) and thus depriving players who are "move vital" to overall team success then I have a problem.

Name me a player more vital to the Panthers' success this year than Cam Newton?

As long as there is a cap, players can make whatever in my view

They are signed based on both performance and potential just like a normal job with the more important positions and higher draft picks getting more money. If they suck at their job, they get the boot and a life not as an NFL starter. Some teams are anxious to spend a lot on these talents and some aren't.

...But sh*t that's some crazy money for that Heyward-Bey dude

I'm trying to find this article but here's what a dude at another website said about it

The maths only work when its the same team over and over AND the pick busts(hello lions), if a team just gets a top 5 pick once or twice a decade there's no real detriment. I wish I could find the link but my google fu is failing me.

The whole thing is based on the premise that if you are terrible enough to draft in the top 5 multiple times in a decade and if those draft picks all bust it will be far more detrimental to your club than a team that drafts 10-15 repeatedly and having all those picks bust.

Basically, the high price of contracts that the top 5 command sucks if your team is terrible at drafting, playing football, and winning games. The Lions. But the point of the draft is to help terrible clubs be better, and the thing is, as structured, the drafting in the top 5 can make things far worse for the teams that continue to employ Matt Millen for a decade.
