Pretty much this.

Smith says things like this each and every year but never follows through with it (to a casual observer). Are things different? Not obviously so, but then we don't see everything that is going on. I would love this to be the case, but I think it's really a bit late in all honesty. Our receivers are not rookies and if he hasn't developed a relationship with them I can't see that changing much all of a sudden.

You are right, but I have been to training camp and you can tell right off the bat he isn't trying to help the young guys. His argument that he doesn't want to get close b/c a lot of the guys get cut is without merit. Guys that we draft in the first couple of rounds aren't in any risk to get cut because they sign (typically) 4 year rookie deals. I see where he is coming from on a fringe player, but I don't want him wasting his time on a guy that is just trying to make the team anyway.

That's what I was trying to say, only in a much less thought out manner!

I am a Smith fan, but he (thus far) is all talk and no action when it comes to mentoring. I would like for Smith to show that he is cable of not being a distraction to the rookies first. His tantrums last year on and off the field directed at Clausen made me want to throw up. I don't care if he hates Clausen, how did any of those tantrums help the team or Clausen? This guy is so full of it.

Maybe this year is different, but I won't fall for the talk until he backs it up. As they say, fool me once, shame on you, fool me twice, shame on me.....

you do realize Smith was the only one last year pumping Clausen up before the games..

funny how that leads you to believe he hates Clausen..

He also pumped him up during games with his on the field antics and after the game in interviews saying Clausen should apologize to the offense.

I know it is a long shot but I wish he could play his whole career in Carolina.

It is a long shot. Even Jerry Rice and Joe Montana didnt stay in one place their whole career. "Not For Long" is a cold business as evidenced by this lockout. But it would be nice to see our ownership & franchise step up and reward its greatest player and allow him to finish his whole career with the team that drafted him and believed in him first. #89 is Mr.Panther, always will be to me. I only want to see him in that black & blue.
