Is Charles Johnson overrated?

Recommended Posts

several reports have come out about CJ being the best DE in the game last year...

He did, he was fantastic against the run and the pass. Had a great stop rate and great pressure numbers. He had a fantastic season, if not the best year for a DE last season then his was top 2 or 3.

Going off his numbers over the last few years, I'd say he's a top 5 DE in the league right now and definitely deserves the money he's about to get.

CJ is the best DE on the Panthers, and one of the best in the league. I am under the impression that the Panthers will make a strong run at resigning him. They WANT to keep him, and they WILL make him rich to prove it. Which opens the door to a scary thought. Does CJ actually WANT to be here?

Does he want to stay with a team that is up and coming, and will probably offer the best deal? Or will he take less money from a team that is already competitive?

Does he have loyalty to the team that drafted and groomed him? Who is willing to prove their loyalty with cold hard cash. Or will he turn his back on that organization, and the fans, to play for a team that is already established.?

I was under the impression that Free Agency was formed so players were free to broker the best deal possible. It should stand to reason that if the Panthers offer him the best deal possible, he would be a Panther this season. So it could be presumed that if CJ does leave, he will be turning his back on the fundamental priciples of Free Agency.

I suppose I must delay my assessment of CJ until he actually signs a contract. Scares me to think I am actually hoping a player goes after the money.

I think that is what I am thinking anyway. And of course, GOOOOOO PANTHERS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I'm not sure that I can say he is the best. And I say that because, if he was so fantastic and so elite then he should have locked the starting role opposite Peppers last year. Yet for some reason Peppers remained the top dog of DE's on our team. Maybe that has something to do with the coach and playing time or maybe he just made a huge leap last year.

Either way he is a work horse and he is worth the money. CJ has loads of talent and loads of heart and work ethic. His qualities balance themselves out unlike that one DE who used to be here.

We do not have a choice. Here is the list of priorities

1. Re-sign CJ

2. SIgn Cofield or Mebane

3. Re-sign TDavis (we have nothing behind him with the exception of a 5th round rookie)

4. Sign a CB

5. Sign a veteran QB

6. Re-sign Anderson

7. Re-sign DW.

I would personally bump #7 up at least 3 or 4 places in that list...

Reality:

1. Re-sign CJ and DW

2. Sign Cofield

3. Re-sign TD

4. Sign a CB no one is happy with that turns out to be good

5. Keep Moore as back-up (not my preference)

6. Re-sign Anderson

7. Redo Beason and Kalil and no more $

How is resigning DW ahead of addressing the DT position if we have a shot at Cofield?

How is resigning DW ahead of addressing the DT position if we have a shot at Cofield? Cofield would have a much bigger impact overall for Carolina.
