Pep to New England *rumor*

Corner and DE/OLB are the Pats two biggest needs and we have Lucas and Peppers to offer....for the right price.

NE really doesn't like to give up picks so watching Kraft and Hurney go at it would be epic, and probably a very slow, methodical process that would take weeks to hash out.

Tell me if I'm wrong but Peppers still hasn't signed the Franchise tender yet meaning he could still sign with someone else, right? (If he does this, that's when we get our two 1st rounders.)

He has three options...

  • Sign and Play
  • Don't Sign, Don't Play and Don't Get Paid
  • Agree to a Trade and Sign With the New Team

He can also sign with another team, get a contract offer, hope the Panthers don't match it, and play. Giving the Panthers two 1st rounders. He doesn't have to wait for a trade unless he sign's the tender. (This is the less likely option though.)

I thought I covered that scenario with my third option, but I may not have been clear...

Ah, ok, I don't consider that a trade just because our FO doesn't have to be involved at all in that scenario.

Na, what he is saying is Peppers is totally free to sign with a new team, the team must be willing to give us two first round picks though. That scenario does not involve a trade at all.

That is just the compensation we get for another willing team signing our franchise player.

(and we still would have the right to match any offer)

I understand that, it was simply a matter of terminology. I consider that as a trade, you guys think it's not, no problem...

PFT has a note up about this... mainly with reasons they think it won't happen...

http://www.profootballtalk.com/2009/03/02/pats-to-make-a-play-for-peppers/

First, the Pats don’t shell out huge deals to many players, especially not to players who have never played a down for the Patriots.

Second, Peppers would have to be willing to ignore the seven-year, $100 million contract with $41 million guaranteed that Albert Haynesworth received from the Redskins

Third, Peppers has blossomed of late into a pain in the butt, trying to use the media to force his way out of Carolina

Fourth, Belichick rarely gets worked up about players from other teams unless those guys have given Belichick fits
