Sorenson: Claussen will almost certainly open season as starter

Recommended Posts

I am loving how all of you have made the assumption that Cam is going to start Game #1 as "now a fact".

Rivera has done or said nothing that can lead you to this conclusion.

I, for one, can say that I would not be surprised if it went either way. Good thing is that we will know the answer in less than 7 days.

if Cam does decent tonight and Clausen does nothing to legitimately stand out......I do think most assume that does mean Cam starts week 1. Cam seems to have an edge b/c he can get the job by beating Clausen or with a tie.....

Cam may not have proved anything at the NFL level as of right now, but Jimmy has proven something... That he is not currently capable of being a starting QB.

I also don't believe the decision will take anywhere near 7 days. I would say we will know by Saturday or Sunday, but it may become apparant in the 2nd quarter tonight when Jimmy sharts his pants during a Miami blitz. The reason Rivera wants to name the starter after this game is so that they can treat Preseason Game #3 as a live game with an entire week of preparation starting on Monday... The only way to prepare all week is to name the starter sometime this weekend.

I will gladly eat crow if I am wrong, but using the context clues... I believe the harder decision will be who will be backing up Mr. Newton.

Who knows but there is a lot of downside to starting a rookie QB in the NFL who is not ready. Please note exhibit a) Jimmy Clausen. Enormous setback for the rookie.

If Cam does start and blows up has it been worth it? Makes more sense to me to start Clausen or even Anderson for the first few games at least.

Bradford was no more ready than Clausen....

but but Bradford prepared as the starter in the preseason (whatever but okay).

The Golden Calf of Bristol looked miles better/ahead and he was FAR from ready.....

The excuses for Clausen are absurd.....going in this board boasted about how there was no better scenario for a rookie than Carolina......that was until he was epcically horrific and then it was everyone else at fault. If you followed his career at ND....he wasn't a fit for what Fox did. That is why he flopped.

I'm not making excuses for JC, far from it. I'm just saying there can be a big downside if the chosen one starts and fails miserably. You also have to consider the supporting cast and Bradford comes out miles ahead in that regard. I would also argue Bradford was considerably more ready than JC. The Golden Calf of Bristol will never be ready and I don;t think he looked good at all.

lol, how do you figure Bradford had talent miles ahead.....just not true. Bradford had fans coming out of the seats playing WR for him practically.

Bradford fit what the offense was doing.....and that makes or breaks how things pan out. Clausen had the better talent around.....it just was irrelevent b/c Jimmy wasn't drafted to fit into Fox's offense.

The Golden Calf of Bristol is far from ready......but if you watched The Golden Calf of Bristol last year he was miles better than Clausen. Starting or sitting them for a year....the success rate is about the same.

Slice it however you wish. You may be right about talent but SL won 3.5x as many games as Carolina, it ain't all QB. Your point about Bradford fitting the offense and Clausen not fitting makes my point about about starting when he is not ready. Bradford was and Clausen wasn't.
