Honda Fit = $17k = as much, if not more, room as a small SUV = 38-43 MPG on regular unleaded

^^^^

hands down, best car i've ever driven. i LOOOOOOOVE my car. bought it july 4, 2007 and just crossed 99k miles yesterday. i've never had to do a single thing to it other than regular maintenance, and while it was advertised as 33-38 mpg when sold to me, i surpass that on a regular basis. it's taken me to maine twice, pennsylvania and new jersey more times than i can remember, michigan twice, illinois, alabama... and never once have i had a problem and EVERY trip i average AT LEAST 42 mpg

and when i say it can haul more than most small SUV's, i'm not kidding. you'd be shocked to see what i can get in there (twss). if you don't need more than the two seats, the rears lay down completely flat and offer ridiculous amounts of room

1.5L 4-cylinder doesn't offer a ton of hp, but it gets the job done. especially if you get a manual (which any sane person would)... i've been up and down the appalachian mountains and have never had a problem unless i get stuck behind someone doing 40 and can't get back up to speed during an incline

really, it's a fantastic car

I'm about to really help you out...

I just got rid of my 06 explorer... It had so much shyit wrong with it that it shouldn't have had a 70,000 miles... I will Never ever again buy another Ford as long as I live.

I was upside-down in my previous vehicle and bought the explorer when Ford almost went under... Got a 12,000 rebate so I guess the explorer served it's purpose.

With all that said I did and do Very extensive research when making any big purchase...

My wife and I knew we could not use less space so we knew we needed a SUV as well. I wanted a Tahoe but the payments were gonna be ridiculous...

Here's a few that you should look at as far as bang for your buck... I don't know your financial situation so I'll give u two low end vehicles and then two high ends... I will also include the Tahoe for poo's and giggles...

Low end: the Mittsubishi Outlanlander and Kia Sorento.

Slick looking SUV's with Fantastic warrantees... Interiors on both kind of have a cheap look and feel. 4wd was also a must for us... Their ratings are good and so are their crash ratings.

High end: the GMC Acadia and the 2011 Dodge Durango

Acadia was super nice but didn't have to towing power we were looking for. Also wasn't worth the bang for our buck..

We went with the New Durango and couldn't be happier! Awesome warrantee and even got it extended. (didn't want to be in the same situation as the explorer) relatively low mileage and a busted vehicle. We wanted to feel secure in our purchase...

By far the most cargo space in it's class...the front seat even folds flat so that u could put a canoe or Kayak inside... I currently get between 19.6 and 20.7 mpg in The City... I was getting 15-16 city with the explorer driving in the same place and just as aggressive.

24 gallon tank, so it's expensive to fill up, but I truck myself by filling up when I get to 1/4 tank. Doesn't hurt as bad. Lol. The new Durangos are nice as FUG! Rides way more smooth than my old explorer. Also has balls... When I go to pass on the highway or city it picks up quick with no delay as my explorer had. I'd recommend it to anybody and everybody!!

The Tahoe... Oh the Tahoe... This is the last year that it's actually going to get the true Truck frame... Next years model will be more lightweight to accommodate better mpg. If u want it hooked up though with all the bells and whistles you're looking at a 600+ payment...

In the end I am so glad that we got the Durango, even has Sattrlite TV for our son... He's only 5 months so it's pointless right now but I'll Renee the subscription for those long rd trips... Or he can just watch his veggie tales, or baby Einstein.

I hope this helped you in some way.... Good luck

Btw we got the V6 model crew AWD... No need for a hemi.... The mpg would have gone way down. The pent star engine in the new Durango is the HEAT!

yeah I had a European car and luckily it was on warranty the whole time I had it. I would have been out 5K+ on random fixes that were covered. European cars are nice and generally reliable but I would never want to own one not on warranty.

Tru. You and I have had very different experiences with Fords.

My family has two Explorers and an F150, all with over 250K miles, only major cost between the three has been a new rear end for the truck and a new tranny for the oldest explorer.

Close...it's a 2008 550i. I know the person that owns it and it is immaculant and well taken care of but I get what you are saying. I had a Pasaat that cost me an arm and a leg evertime I needed something done.

I just love the car and will probably regret it if I do it. Not only maintance but I am going from a paid off truck to car payments which is stupid also.I just don't have a need for a truck anymore and am looking for something nice and fun to drive.

you only live once. keep the truck (since its paid off) and buy the car. If the car becomes a money pit sell it and you still have the truck.

Interesting comments about the Fit. Not sure I like the syling of it, but I also regularly haul a couple-hundred pounds of band equipment in my vehicle along with a person or two extra... seems like it may not be up to this task.

I replaced the transmission on my 2002 Ford Explorer Eddie Bauer not even two and a half months ago. My mom bought the car new, then gave it to me when I started driving. All of a sudden, transmission goes out and my car doesn't even have 81,000. I like the car, but probably won't be buying another Ford based simply on the fact that transmission problems in Explorers are well known to just about everyone EXCEPT Ford. At least they make it seem like they have no idea their transmissions go bad.

Fug Exploders.
