Breaking down the safeties: Carolina

CRA hates Godfrey. Every thread about him is trashed with his comments about how bad he is. On a 2 -14 team last year he was an alternate to the pro bowl, and that's still not good enough for CRA, basically our safeties need to be Jesus and Mohammed for him to be happy.

I'm not partial either way in regards to Godfrey, but in CRA's defense, the ONLY reason Godfrey was a PB alternate last year was his INT's, half of which were gift-wrapped and dropped in his lap. I will give him credit on a few that I saw him make a 'ball-hawk' type play on the ball, but I distinctly remember several that either got tipped up or just fell in his lap.

Your right, all safeties can cover for 5, 10 seconds...can compensate for a weak defensive line.

Oh thank you for point that out.

Lol

so if a safety takes a bad angle on a wr its the dline fault for not getting to the qb.? if a safety allows a TE to get even with him because he doesnt turn his hips it's the dl fault? i got your logic....................

proper angles and getting caught out of position has nothing to do with dl play. play your responsiblitiy and be were you supposed to be.

The entire defensive backfield has been bad for the past several years, save for a few incredible ball-hawking moments in late 2009.

I can't really remember many incredibly ball hawking moments. I remember the 5 INT game by Freeman but that was just a rookie getting welcomed to the NFL.

I think the backfield has been pretty good and will only get better with Meeks staying as the sole Secondary coach.

I think the best thing about Meeks staying is the transition should be a lot easier with the former DC around to make things easier.

Warner also had a 5 pick day.

I say they've been bad for a few reasons...

in 2008 that soft zone was garbage. We gave up 30+ how many times? More blame should go to the coaches than the players, but then again, you have to remember how truly awful they got at times (playoff game especially).

In 2009, Chris Harris was making some beautiful tackles... as long as he was in position. He did pick off Eli and Favre, though. It became very apparent that Gamble had fallen a long way since 2005. Godfrey... well, I just remember the whole backfield improved when he was injured.

2010 - I think I have a mental block. I really can't remember anything besides Clausen stinking it up.

lol me too. Also in early 2009 I was doing a different major with 18 hours and working about 25 hours mostly on the weekends. It stressed me out so bad I don't want to think any of the early 2009 games. Not until school was over did we start that nice little streak do those games bring back good memories. I didn't watch any games from 2009 except the first one.

If Martin has had the same problem (being out of position) since his rookie year, then that's more the coaching staff's fault than his. If a player has one singular main issue, it's the coaches job to ensure it gets fixed - or at least worked on.

I think many of our players, particularly on defense, will do better once Rivera and co. get in there and start working with them.

Oh noes!! CRA said Godfrey isn't a good S.

I don't hate Godfrey. There are tons of threads where I credit his talent and athletic ability. Kid just can't play S at the NFL at a consistant enough basis.

I am big fan of moving on when something doesn't work and there isn't enough potential shown to justify waiting for improved play.

Don't hand me that Godfrey pro bowl nonsense. You think DeAngelo Hall was a good CB last year?

Deadskins always get voted into the pro bowl, the fact that Godfrey is a panther, and we were fuging terrible last year is impressive

    • The defense is 28 out of 32 in salary cap allocation for 2025. We have a ton of resources tied up in the offense including the highest paid OL in the league multiple 1st round WR's and multiple recent draft picks across the offense at TE and RB and we have two 1000 yard backs. Bryce and company couldn't get past Tyler Shough and his crew in 2 games. That's all there is to it. You can spin it and put the entire onus on the defense to your heart's desire it doesn't change the fact that this is an OFFENSIVE team now. If you want to argue that we should revert back to a defensive identity as we have been in the past which has brought us success then I will agree with you on that. But as it stands the onus is on the offense because that is where we have invested through the nose. Dave Canales and Bryce Young need to do a hell of a lot better than they have against the rebuilding Saints who without us should only have 2 wins this season.
    • Bryce is not trending up. He is the same QB he has always been. Bottom of the league in most categories.  If Canales thinks he can build a contender with Bryce then he is a bigger idiot then I thought.  Offense next year will have the same issues and be just as inconsistent as it was this year.  We have seen Bryce’a ceiling and it is 175 yards a game and that is not a QB you keep around as your starter. That is barely a backup.
    • Looks like Darnold should have had at least 3 picks. That'll get ugly in the playoffs eventually. Can't deny his physical talent though. You either have that or you don't. Mike Macdonald is a legit coach.
