Good news for a change

Sleep apnea is as common as diabetes.

I felt like crap all the time, knew my energy was no where near what it once was and my wife said my snoring was terrible.

I stopped breathing 114 times in 4 hours the night I went to get tested. I'm on a full mask with 14 cm of air, which went up from 11 last March.

I'm not used to the mask yet and last night was a pain, but I still feel a definite difference.

A good friend of mine who passed away used to wear one of those. He hated it but knew he had to wear it. I used to give him sh*t about it.

People can die from sleep apnea. It's a serious thing. I recommend if you have sleep issues to see a sleep specialist. You can have SA even if you aren't a fatty. It's never good to not breathe for any period of time!

It's great to hear some good news from you JOAT! Maybe now you will start feeling better and have a better quality of life.

Serious stuff. Glad you got it diagnosed and got what you need.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sleep_apnea

an individual with sleep apnea is rarely aware of having difficulty breathing, even upon awakening.[3] Sleep apnea is recognized as a problem by others witnessing the individual during episodes or is suspected because of its effects on the body (sequelae). Symptoms may be present for years (or even decades) without identification, during which time the sufferer may become conditioned to the daytime sleepiness and fatigue associated with significant levels of sleep disturbance.

The risk of OSA rises with increasing body weight, active smoking and age. In addition, patients with diabetes or "borderline" diabetes have up to three times the risk of having OSA.

Common symptoms include loud snoring, restless sleep, and sleepiness during the daytime

Sleep-disordered breathing is associated with an increased risk of cardiovascular disease, stroke, high blood pressure, arrhythmias, diabetes, and sleep deprived driving accidents.[17][18][19][20] When high blood pressure is caused by OSA, it is distinctive in that, unlike most cases of high blood pressure (so-called essential hypertension), the readings do not drop significantly when the individual is sleeping.[21] Stroke is associated with obstructive sleep apnea.[22]

Some symptoms a person may have but might think are unrelated to osa are headaches especially in the morning after waking, frequent night time trips to the bathroom, anxiety, chest pain while you're asleep, memory problems. Some common symptoms are snoring, excessive daytime sleepiness, fatigue, difficulty concentrating, feeling as if you can never get enough sleep, waking up feeling like you've been hit by a mack truck, gasping for air while asleep.

Hawk, if you're having issues with sleeping maybe you should visit a sleep specialist. It wouldn't hurt just to see.

Good to hear it John. I tried a Cpap for awhile and just couldn't get used to it and gave up. Went through 4 sleep studies and numerous masks. Asked Panthro for advice on getting used to it and he was absolutely no help as usual. Decided to quit using it and just take up smoking again and become one with the apnea. I have a brand new mask thingy if you need one. I think it is a full mask but would have to check to be sure.

Are you trying to say smoking is bad for me?

I actually only had mild apnea and really did try to get used to it but couldn't. Never made it more than an hour or two of sleep with the machine on. Decide to change other things and dropped 30 lbs. since then and it has got much better. Should have done that in the first place.

Sorry but half of the things you listed are related to me in some way. Whether it be from laziness (excessive daytime sleepiness, fatigue, difficulty concentrating) or having a severe case of asthma (waking up feeling like you've been hit by a mack truck, gasping for air while asleep.)
