Suicide.

You're assuming that your experiences are universal. Just because you overcame depression doesn't mean it's possible for everyone else to. There are people with painful, chronic diseases that are expensive to treat and consider suicide their best option. Telling them to read Eastern philosophy and to be hopeful is selfish on your part.

You must have not even read what I first posted...that there are situations where life cannot be experienced to the fullest and people can't get what they want out of life because of it.

Quoting myself:

The only time suicide is okay is if you are uncontrollably suffering. I'm saying situations like, you're terminally ill and want to go on your own terms, or were in a horrible accident or something, and you get no pleasure from life anymore because of what has happened to you. I see no reason a physically healthy person should commit suicide, there is always hope.

And suicide is selfish, regardless of the definition of selfish you want to use. Taking your own life, asserts control over your own life, maybe control you didn't have or thought you had in life.

My uncle killed himself in 1984. It has haunted my family. He left a note that said he was killing himself because this woman he was in love with wouldn't have him, I've never seen the letter though. I have heard a few of my family members say they think she should be in prison for murder. He was also involved in dealing drugs and there were people after him who he owed money to, who were also connected to the woman he was in love with. I've heard other people say these people that were after him killed him and made it look like he shot himself. I don't know why he's dead, I was only 6 when it happened. I just know my whole family has been wounded by his death. They are still hurt and angry about it today and when ever it's brought up they start acting crazy.

I'm sure they are, especially when there isn't typical closure such as old age or a critical illness.

sounds like he made a lot of bad decisions that dictated his life.

I'm trying to focus on those who are dealing with a critical illness in the same sense as someone who has heart disease or kidney failure or a brain tumor..

I'm just going to add...because this is certainly not one of my favorite topics to discuss...but I know from personal experience that seeing how suicide affects a family and friends etc, living through all that automatically erased any thoughts of doing it myself I might have started to have. I'm sure we've all had times when we thought life sucked for whatever reason, and we thought we'd be better off dead. Anyone having these thoughts should talk to someone who has lost a loved one first!!!

I guess the point I'm trying to get across is the difference between those who temporarily think "life's sucks" and those dealing with chronic depression..

society doesn't seem able to accept the difference.

I think suicide is selfish... As selfish as masturbating. It's a basic human right and if anyone wants to do it then they should.

The whole idea of hurting someone's feelings is out of the question once someone has reached the point of wanting to commit suicide. Clearly they have larger issues and need to focus on their own needs instead of the needs of others. Also these people are probably more of a burden to society than anything else. I imagine their so-called 'loved ones' may actually be glad to see them go.

you are clearly out of touch with reality!

do I promote suicide? no.

but if you have never felt bone chilling depression, I wouldn't expect anyone could understand why those thoughts would cross their mind.

it's easy to judge someone when you cannot relate to such feelings. that's like me looking at someone with diabetes and telling them they should just start making their own insulin..

would be pretty ignorant of me right?

people don't kill themselves because they had a bad day. they kill themselves after years of excruciating depression, a feeling words could never describe..
