Carolina Crazy V2

The Panthers seem to think he can be replaced for even less than that (i.e. Richard Marshall's salary).

And honestly, if they upgrade the line to where it ought to be, they might be right.

Yeah, and that'll probably work out about as well as last time the tried to promote their nickel.

Maybe.

But in fairness, the year we went to the Super Bowl we didn't really have "shutdown" corners. What it seems we're returning to here is the kind of defense John Fox preferred in his early days.

Will that sort of scheme work at a time when rule enforcement doesn't allow corners to be as physical as they could be before "the Patriot rule" took effect? Unknown.

Nope they didn't have great corners in 03, and in the end that's what cost them the superbowl. However as bad as 03's secondary was it was worse in 04 when they decided to let the vets walk in favor of their backups. That's exactly why the Panthers went out and drafted a firs round corner, and picked up a talanted FA for the other side.

People have forgotten how bad the secondary was before Gamble, and Luc arrived.

I haven't.

I complained about the lack of cover corners for years until we finally got a couple.

That said, I believe this scheme can work if (and that's a big "if") the line that's ultimately created is as dominant as the Tampa line was with Sapp and company in the Bucs glory days.

The problem is the personnel to have a dominant line isn't here and probably won't be for a few years. 2.8 million isn't going to change that. So we weaken the secondary and expect to improve in 09, or even 2010 with our other salary issues?

I think the guess here for carolina is Peppers being traded for draft picks and us signing Robertson. Then drafting a De in the draft to replace Brayton, with Johnson starting on the other side. Kemo and Lewis would be rotational guys. Also with the extra picks from a Peppers trade we could use a pick on a corner in round 2.

I hope we hold on to Ken Lucas. We didn't cut him in the cap space moves, so I think we're making an effort to hold onto him. We have a great trio with him, Gamble, and Marshall in the Nickel. Marshall needs at least one more year to develop, but he's a starter for sure. Why rush it? Hold onto Lucas
