Free Agent CBs

Carolina Crazy V2

Recommended Posts

Right now, I think the position we need to adress is CB. I don't think we can upgrade the defensive line through free agency so we can use the draft to pick up a defensive tackle/end.

I see the Panthers either releasing/restructuring/trading Ken Lucas so this would leave us room to pick up a good 2nd string CB. I think if we get rid of Lucas, Bryant McFadden and Chris Johnson are two guys we should look at.

Byrant Mcfadden If we get rid of Ken Lucas, we have a little more money to use and I think picking up McFadden would put the money to good use. He has more starting experience, is smarter and better against the run. He is not as athletic as Johnson though.

Chris Johnson If we end up restructuring Lucas and still don't have a lot of cap room, Chris Johnson would be a guy who I think has the talent to be a no.2 cornerback. Every game that I watched, he seemed to get the job done. Maybe it's just me, but Johnson is fast and a great press corner who has improved drastically over this past year.

The San Francisco Chronicle cites "a league source" reporting that Brian Dawkins has agreed to a two-year contract with the Broncos.

Philly was considered a near lock to retain Dawkins on a one-year deal, but he's set to quarterback the Broncos defense in a Rodney Harrison-type role. Dawkins showed last season that he has plenty left in tank and will help the Broncos defense get back to respectability while in rebuilding mode.

Our current roster of corners may be fine given the scheme we plan to run (assuming the line is improved).

I think so, too. It would be nice to see if their is any difference in play with just a coaching change and the same core group of players.

I wonder, however, how Lucas would feel about returning to a team that tried to ship him off to Detroit, even after he forgave Smith last summer and was able to steer the team past what could have been a very messy situation.

We don't know they tried to ship him off. From all indications the Lions called the Panthers (a cat call, pun intended). It very well could have gotten no further than Carolina asking Luc if he would consider it, if so nothing to be upset about it was dropped quickly.

That said I'm concerned the Panthers don't realize the best corners available are under contract, they need to extend Luc!

Chandler thinks they're still trying to trade him.

Sheppard trade a glimpse of Lucas' value

According to NFL.com's Adam Schefter, the Eagles are completing a deal to send cornerback Lito Sheppard to the Jets for a 2009 fifth-round pick and a 2010 conditional pick, which could be as high as a second-rounder or as low as a fourth-rounder.

Sheppard will be 28 by the start of the season and is two years younger than Lucas.

However, Lucas has been more of a consistent starter. Lucas started every game for the past two seasons and has 63 starts, counting playoffs, since arriving with the Panthers in 2005. Sheppard started just three games last season and never has started all 16 games in a season.

A fifth-round pick this year and a fourth-rounder next year, with the possibility of it becoming a second based upon agreed-upon conditions, would seem reasonable compensation for Lucas. Of course, the Panthers might have to take less because of his age. Given the Panthers' recent dealings with the Jets (such as the Kris Jenkins trade last year), you'd have to think Carolina offered Lucas to New York.

Any compensation for Lucas would beat having to release him without getting anything in return. The Panthers would save $2.375 million under their 2009 salary cap by releasing or trading Lucas.

Makes sense.

In your opinion can Lucas be replaced for 2.375 million? Where are they going to find a starting CB for that, I'm not sure in this market a nickel can be had for much less.

The Panthers seem to think he can be replaced for even less than that (i.e. Richard Marshall's salary).

And honestly, if they upgrade the line to where it ought to be, they might be right.
