Asheville City Schools announced today that Asheville High will have two new basketball coaches for next season.

Longtime girls coach Sonita Warren-Dixon has resigned to become the boys coach, while Marvin Smith will head up the girls program.

Warren-Dixon led the Cougars girls to a 184-89 record in 10 seasons and three consecutive NCHSAA 3-A championships (2003, 2004 and 2005). Former WNBA player Rashanda McCants was one of her top players during that run.

“I always said the only job I would ever leave for would be to coach the boys,” Warren-Dixon said.

“What a great opportunity this is to do it at this school. At the same time, it’s bittersweet and a sad thing. I’ve been involved with the girls program for 10 years and it’s hard to leave that behind. The good part is that I’m not leaving this school.”

She is believed to be one of the first female coaches for a boys basketball program not only in Western North Carolina, but in the NCHSAA.

Sounds like she is a good coach. Best of luck to her and her team.

Way to go Asheville!
