Could I kill someone that was attacking my friends/family with the intent to kill them? Yes.

Could I trade one innocent life for another? Probably not.

If someone attacked my wife/kids...I'd pull a southern comfort-esque and probably skin them alive and leave them for the animals to pick at and finish off.

I know without a doubt that if some person hurt/molested/ or otherwise injured one of my boys maliciously that I would have no problem doing the time for killing them.

If it was between them and some random person, I wouldn't like it, but I would probably do it... your kids are really all you've got in this world.

And yes I would sleep well at night knowing I had done one of the very few things I was put on this earth to do, protect my child at all costs.

and you would be sleeping in a prison cell....and your child would know why he is alive.

I mean, this question could EASILY be a bad movie. What if your kid can't live with the burden of what you did and takes their own life??

also, what if the next day your kid is selected as the "random" person as you weren't the only one given this choice.

Sure you could.

Someone is going to die either way and you get to choose to keep the one person who means something to you. Of course you would choose to save the one you love. You might feel horrible about it, but that wouldn't stop you from making the choice.

That other person could also be loved the same way you love your child.
