Canes Re-Sign Pitkanen

Recommended Posts

RALEIGH, NC – Jim Rutherford, President and General Manager of the National Hockey League’s Carolina Hurricanes, today announced that the team has agreed to terms with defenseman Joni Pitkanen on a three-year contract. The deal will pay Pitkanen $4.5 million per season.

“Joni has been a very important part of our defense as he plays in all situations,” said Rutherford. “He plays a lot of minutes, and is one of the top puck-movers in the league. We are very pleased that he wanted to return to the Hurricanes.”

Canes Offseason So Far

So far, the Canes have gone through the NHL draft, picked Ryan Murphy, Victor Rask, Keegan Lowe, Gregory Hofmann, Matt Mahalak, and Brody Sutter. The Canes have also signed Jay Harrison (Two Year Contract), Justin Shugg (Entry Level Contract), Patrick Dwyer (One-Way Two Year Contract), and Joni Pitkanen (Three Year Contract). Finally, they have chosen not to extend qualifying offers to Troy Bodie and Jiri Tlusty, making them unrestricted free agents.

I don't understand why we payed him 4.5 million a season. This is the NHL not the NFL, NBA, or MLB. These guys are supposed to get the same type of contracts that American soccer players receive. Also if defense was the problem last year, why are we adding the same defensemen that were on the roster last year to fix the problem? I'm not quite sure I understand what this JR is doing either.
