DT v. DE in Rivera's Scheme

I agree with you. I think that we will be bringing a DT free agent and Cofield or Mebane will be a great place to start. On the other hand I am not down on some of our guys notable Landri and yes I said it, Hayden. I know that folks have said a lot of great things about Fua but I agree with you, I like McClain quite a bit. It will take him 7 or 8 games at least to develop better hand and foot work, but once he learns the tricks, he will be a load. Ed Johnson is a big guy but he seems to not have a high motor and seems injury prone.

I don't think we will bring in a DE if we can resign Charles Johnson. He is the lynchpin to the defense this year. With Brown, Hardy, Johnson, Brayton, Norwood and Taylor we should be set.

As for linebackers we will try to sign Davis and Anderson and retain our core group. I don't know how much it will take to sign them this year, though. We surely have the money. Beason, Davis, and Anderson are all athletic and fast which is necessary in this defense so I expect we will not want to lose any of them.

Hayden should most likely be gone. I'll be shocked if he's still with the team come September. Landri is a toss up.

I still think there's gonna be someone that we get outta left field that surprises most of us. I just don't know who, but it seems to happen every once in a while. That's why I threw Bowen's name out there

We will likely take 6 DTs to camp and wittle that down to four. I don't know where Landri and hayden will fit if at all. But the competition will be strong and we should be much improved on the defensive line this year.

That's the most important thing

I'm interested in knowing what his scheme is. He ran Lovie's scheme in Chicago, obviously the cover 2, and ran what SD had already established with the 3-4. To me, it appears he can adapt to multiple systems using the current personnel. I know he used the word aggressive a lot so I would expect blitzes and physical play in the secondary and of course as mentioned, multiple looks in the front 7.

You could argue that he's going to be running Jim Johnson's scheme here (via McDermott).

Hard to say that either spot is more important because it all has to work together. I do believe we'll see a change in one factor though. Whether it was due to poor personnel or poor scheme (you could make a case either way) inside pressure was near non-existent in the latter half of the Fox era. QBs just about always had a nice safe pocket in which to step up, which meant no matter how good our edge rush was, there was only so much it could accomplish.

Over the past few years, I've nicknamed our pass rush "The Near Miss Attack". Here's hoping that name no longer applies.

Kemo was never a great fit in that regard

you wouldn't notice him playing out of position on a run play, but against the pass he had shown he was just a 3-4 nose trying to play the interior in a 4-3. Obv with more and more teams trying to win with the arm of their QB he became more and more of a liability in there (even before his achilles tear) and correspondingly overall our defense got worse and worse year to year but from now on we need DTs that aren't just going to eat up blockers against he pass because the goal is to get in the backfield.

at least now it is. Kemo was good at what he did (take on double teams) but he was good for nothing else really. 23 million dollars of one trick pony

i'm not sure one is more important than the other, but i do think the DTs' role in the new defense is far more sharply defined than the DEs. DEs will probably go back to occasional dropping back into zone as part of a more versatile blitz scheme. the DTs will likely be asked to take up blockers and create penetration to disrupt plays in the backfield.
