I used punch cards in HS and "computers" with no hard drives. 5 1/4" discs were cool as poo compared to that. back in the day ya know. Wireless internet still amazes me. :)

We had whole systems that used 5.25" and we would ack it up weekly. Took almost 1/2 a day and 25 discs.

That was back when extra memory cost $100/Meg.

Used cassette tapes, paper tapes, copying code from Computer Shopper, mag cartridge tapes, 8 inch hard sector one sided floppies and all the others. The 3.5 inch floppy was invented by a Japanese engineer (for Sony I think) and was based on Spocks colorful "computer tapes" he would insert into his terminal.
