Anyone ever visit Oak Island

The family and I are heading there next week and I've never been so I was hoping to get some input on some good local restaurants and also some activities the island offers. From what I researched this seems like a pretty quite island and it looks like there isn't to much going on, I might have to travel to Myrtle or Wilmington..

If you want night life you will have to travel to Wilmington or Myrtle. There are a few small bars on the Island. There's a pretty decent Irish Pub in Southport called Slainte that has a decent crowd most nights. Also for good food your best bet is downtown Southport if you want to stay close to the island. I live in Southport BTW.

I think the object of going here, or anywhere in Southern OBX or further up, is to relax and be away from all the restaurants, the mini-golf courses and amusements, and a beach-wear shop on every corner. I prefer going to Emerald Isle, NC, but having young kids, we go to the MB area just to have poo to do.

Bettys Restaurant in Holden Beach isnt too far and has good seafood.

If you have kids take the ferry from Southport to the Fort Fisher Aquarium- you can also hit some places in Carolina Beach that way if you want to drive up that far.

Personally - Id stay the hell away from both Wilmington and Myrtle if it were my vacation.

I'll be down there next weekend, too. I hope to do some fishing either in the surf or off of the pier.

Go check out the lighthouse and the Coast Guard Station. Certain days of the week you can climb the lighthouse, and you can tour the Coast Guard Station, too.

There is also the Oak Island Nature Center, which is cool if you are into that kind of stuff.

You can catch the ferry over to Bald Head Island and check out the lighthouse there.

As for food, we usually hit Clem's Seafood and get fresh shrimp and fish to cook at the house. We also never miss the chance to go to Yacht Basin Provision Co.
