Panthers lead list of teams on the hook with new projected salary floor

The writer of that looked at the one year when many teams elected to dump salary. This includes us. Historically, we have operated right at the cap. I don't expect that will change making the minimum slary requirement moot.

But it throws water on the idea of JR going cheap for anyone doubting his willingness to spend since it sounds like he'll have no choice... and it can't be "funny money" it has to be actual player salaries.

P.S. I'm not one in the camp of folks thinking JR was going cheap just for the sake of being cheap.

The author of this article doesn't know what the FUG he's talking about... TB has the most to spend... This article lays it out way better than this pooty one.

http://www.carolinahuddle.com/forum/carolina-panthers/63060-salary-plan-will-help-hurt-these-teams.html

he does know what he's talking about. he's talking about cash committed while the article you linked by clayton is talking about cap committed. both are right. it isn't a competition.

farrar did lay things out a bit better, though, and cash committed is more relevant than cap space, imo, considering the empahsis in the new CBA is going to be on the cash floor rather than the cap.

bucs may have more cap space, but if the info in this article is correct, the panthers have much less cash committed to the 2011 season than we thought and have more cash that needs to be spent than the bucs.

for those of us worried about how many key people have to be re-signed and the cost that it will likely take to make this happen, this information is good. we have about $15mil more than we thought to play with. it isn't enough for us to go hogwild with, but it helps take some of the pressure off.

that begs the question why he would suddenly do something so against his character at this juncture.

Judging by your pathetic axiomatic "explanation" you probably can't.

These articles are so stupid. The Panthers have always been well above the salary floor except for one year b/c JR thought we weren't going to have football this year. Plus once we resign the guys everyone know we are going to resign we will be right at the minimum floor. Sick of these articles.....

i didn't see where in this article it said the panthers were typically cheap. the last couple years they have looked to be a team trying to downsize their cap obligations. compare the $$ they saved by cutting people loose compared to the $$ spent filling those holes. doesn't really look like a team trying to do much of anything except save money.

you need to look at more years to get a better picture, but from the past couple years it's easy to see how the reputation got there. then considering the hardline JR took with the players throughout the labor dispute...the reputation is even more deserved. it may not be completely right, but it's definitely understandable.

i might be one of the few, but this article actually made me feel better about the financial situation of the team. i know that JR spends money when he has it or isn't in the middle of a labor dispute.

he's got a lot to make up for in regards to last year and i think he was going to be spending a lot of money this year without being "forced" into it because of the new CBA.

the only issue is how much of it is going to go into re-signing those few core players they actually intend on bringing back, how much the rookies are going to get paid (newton really being the only real concern), and how much they are going to have left to pay for FAs brought in. considering it's cash minimum and not cap minimum (cap being much easier to manipulate) having only $57.9 million in cash committed towards the $110mil cash min is a good bit better than having the $70-75mil in cap money committed to the cap that we have been discussing for a while. turns out we were cheaper than we thought. just means more room to sign key guys.

again, it probably doesn't allow for a major spending spree, but it helps our ability to get help for sure.

It just frustrates me that a lot of people have very short memories. When I evaluate a player or owner of a team, I don't make that assessment based on 1 year. Instead, I look at their whole career. No questions JR was writing off last year with econo team, but I will give him the benefit of the doubt based on the other 15 years where he has spent freely when necessary. Saying he is cheap is without merit.

Before I could respond to this I had to look up what "axiomatic" meant...

I can see where my post sounded odd, on one hand I'm talking about how good it is that the new CBA will include a rule that forces owners to spend close to the cap but on the other hand I say I don't think JR will need to be forced...

For the record, I really don't think JR went on the cheap just for the sake of being cheap, I think he went on the cheap for the sake of the lockout and when the lockout is resolved I think our spending patterns will return to form.

Being a reformed Skins fan, I'm particularly grateful for the fact that the Panthers don't spend like drunk sailors in FA every year, I think the Skins are the classic example of why that doesn't work.

    • It's Thielen.   BTW, Thielen is the perfect model for him to follow.
    • Bigcat at Barstool was talking about Purdy and said he’s a guy you win with. Not a guy you win becasue of. Like Allen, Jackson, Mahomes, and Burrow. I’m all for Bryce being our QB the next 2 years, but you can’t go out there a pay him like a top 12 QB when we become a .500 ball club.
