i wouldn't have a problem with this scenario.

Count me in as someone who believes in Godfreys' talent. BUT, he has spent the last three years learning safety. That and he really only played CB in two of his four years at Iowa. So he has five years at safety, and two at CB. Not sure I would feel very comfortable moving him to CB, where he has never played at a professional level.

Also, IMO Weddle may be an upgrade at safety, but I do not think it is a big enough jump to warrant the extra contract.

Just my thoughts, and of course GOOOOO PANTHERS!!!!!!!!!!!!

don't address positions that aren't needs in free agency unless you're fuging over a team in your division.

Like, for example, signing both Johnson and Ray Edwards so the Falcons are stuck trotting people out of the stands to play DE next year.

Of course that would never happen but I like to think about things like that sometimes.

Marshall is the one that needs replacement. Godfrey just needs a little more self-discipline on the field and we definitely have capable coaches to push him in the right direction.

I'd rather invest in a CB in the secondary

True True, but I think it's hard to evaluate any player off of last season with lame duck coaching. The whole staff pretty much knew they were gone. With our safties being young, they could both end up being studs with Coach Rivera.

would be nice, and Godfrey should be playing CB and not S. his angles and getting caught out of position is still to inconstient.but i do see an improvment in his game.

How much was Godfrey being caught out of position and how much was our DB's being out of position. Godfrey is getting killed "by some" on plays that when you look at them, were not his fault. Yeah there were some, but Godfrey made "a ton" of plays last year. Plus he has only gotten better.

and i have stated he has improved, but considering what scheme this team ran last year he was caught out of position. example he was beat by Kellen Winslow but made up by breaking up the ball out of his hands. old Godfrey would have just got burnt.

This isn't so much a Rivera issue as much as it is a Meeks issue. Meeks knows his secondary very well and if he would make the recommandation that Godfrey switch to CB I would trust his assessment.

This is one of those situations that Hurney could look like a genius if he were to fill the need at CB from within and add a great safety for half the contract would take to sign a comparable CB. But it's also a situation that he can not make the dession independently; it would have to come from Meeks and maybe some input from Rivera. The bigger trick would be to sign Godfrey longterm now as a safety, once FA opens, and not wait until next year when he's up for FA and may have proved himself to be a great CB.

That would be the type of move that can make or break a GM's reputation but more than worth it if it pays off.

I don't know why this has become a referendum on Goddfrey. We have two young safeties that have played inconsistently. We could bring in a proven veteran who has played for our coach and performed at a near pro-bowl level. Martin and Goddfrey can compete for the other spot, and hopefully one of them steps up there game.
