How long will the Observer last?

The problem is even if it were a penny, a charge is a charge, people do not want to pay for something that was once free and can be found somewhere else for no charge.

and that will always be the case. Just like with downloading music. Yea the industry stopped illegal downloading with lawsuits but now legal downloading is overtaking $20 CDs that they have came accustom to charging people.

I've actually found myself rather fond of amazon .99 downloads. But that's only because I don't buy much music anymore since I can listen for free on slacker (BTW anyone who hasn't stumbled upon slacker look it up it's awesome). A buck for a song I want to archive is not so bad.

The Observer has been bad for years but when McClatchy bought them out it went to hell. The Herald, the State in Columbia and several other Carolina papers have been bought by McClatchy and they are so biased toward the left it is rediculous. I have a subscription to the Herald but when it runs out I'm through. All I read is Gannt the obituaries (yeah I'm old enough to know some of them)and the classified . Before the election you would have thought the DNC was printing the Herald!

Newspapers have out lived their usefulness They will not be around much longer.

To answer your question: 5 yrs or less

Not true, they make good packing material, cage liners, fire starters etc...

But seriously print media isn't going anywhere, at least not until a few more generations can't see well enough to read. There is still a large number of people who get their news from print who can't or won't change to electronic media.

Considering technology for creating monitors as thin as paper(and flexible) is about to hit the market this year, every newspapers countdown is nearing an end.

Yes, but the technology you are referring to will not host free content, it may replace the media, but not the content provider.

Of course, but the argument that you want to be able to sit at the dining table while drinking your coffee or sitting on the can without having to lug around a laptop will no longer exist.

While that may be true (though I've never head of ths flexible stuff)...COST is still going to keep print around for at least a decade. I'd rather goto a used bookstore or buy a book from time to time than shell out $350 for that damn flatbook reader Amazon sells.

It's called e-paper, like an e-book, but the technology is advancing to the point that it won't be long before the carry piece isn't much more than the screen itself which is flexible.

Just remember that it was only 5 or so years ago that a 32" plasma TV was $10,000+. Now you go to Wal-Mart and buy a 32" Vizio for $500. So papers might be around for a little while, but once you get paper thin digital media readers, papers will go the way of the VHS.

It's the way of technology, I remember when DVD's came out and The Matrix was amazing looking. Now it's Blu-ray, and in 5 more it will be 3D or something else...
