Is trading Peppers now a priority?

With the report that the Panthers are currently last in the league with only 1.9 million in cap space, does the need to trade Peppers in a hurry become a priority? I think that if Hurney is serious about having Peppers here for the 2009 season and that only 2 1st round picks will get the deal done than we will know this by Monday. If the team is willing to negociate and take trade offers than we will see something happen fairly quickly over the weekend.

So if a trade is to happen early on who do you think that team or teams may be? I would guess Denver and Houston as being the favorites. The Panthers would play neither team in the next two seasons, both have plenty of cap space for a big contract for Peppers, both recently cut one of their starting DEs and they are both cities that Peppers has been spotted in.

I am not so sure that we will be trading Peppers very quickly. Anything is possible but I figure Hurney will hold out for the best deal so he won't be jumping right away. Since we aren't likely to be doing much in free agency, there is no reason to have to free up a lot of cap space. If we pick up some free agents they may be the guys others teams release after they jump in to pick up the high priced guys. We might even be relatively quiet until after the draft.

It better be...

I got the feeling just two days ago that trading Peppers wasn't a priority. Most on here were saying that they would wait until the draft and get the best deal possible.

By your comment I take it that you don't feel that way. So if there is going to be some action this weekend involving Peppers who do you see being the other teams?

You could argue that the closer the draft gets the less the offers are going to be. With the team only having 1.9 million other teams are going to know that the Panthers won't have a lot of money going into the draft and training camp and god forbid we have any major injuries and end up needing to sign someone. I think the most we get for Peppers will be this weekend. JMO.

Not sure that is true. We can draft as many players as we need without having to be under the cap. Plus many times teams wait until the draft and often during the draft to make deals. A team that drafts late and sees all the DEs go quickly, might be more induced to ante up.

I figure unless someone jumps quickly and really wants him we won't be getting two firsts for him. And anything less is likely to be nixed by Hurney. In the end Hurney holds the cards since he doesn't need to trade him to anyone.

If he goes early and it is for 2 firsts then someone is desperate. If he goes early and it for a lot less than 2 firsts, then we really wanted to unload him. I figure it will be something in between.

I see your point but waiting until closer to the draft would be something Hurney would do IF he is also willing to keep Peppers through the entire season. I think that if his statement concerning 2 1st were just a negociation tatic, which I think they were, that waiting until the draft is a very risky chance to take and the offers could be less or more, either way.

I think trading Peppers is a priority and that would mean taking a deal earlier than later. I think the cap space is going to dictate that.

That is really the question. Do we want him at all costs or not? Given that we were willing to pay him an astronomical amount to stay, I am not sure the team is so ready to ditch him. On the other hand they are the ones actually doing the negotiating so Hurney knows how badly Peppers really wants to leave and how much is a negotiating ploy. Gross seems to think Peppers would stay so again what you and I think we know is only a guess.

So going back and forth when you are I are only speculating seems to be a waste of time. We will shortly see what is the truth. Guess we will all have to wait and see.

it is, as it should be. That being said, don't expect this to happen anytime soon. It will be a slow process. The team has said it doesn't expect to do much in FA.

The last time I remember the FO saying this they ended up sign three huge contracts by 1am. Not saying thats going to happen tonight but I'm just saying.

It is funny that Peppers and his agent seemed to have ran their mouths about something every other day up until last Thursday. Haven't heard a peep out of them since.

    • well, the comparison is to last year.  The OL is a 180 degree from that.... and overall on the season they have had better skill talent for the same QBs behind a MUCH better OL.    So yeah, the O not looking any better overall is a red flag for Canales.
    • I just want somebody to settle into that Hangartner role and I may give Mays too much credit. He played so well early and has fell off since injuries crept into his vocabulary.  He was struggling to get push on those goal line runs today.
    • You cannot say it doesn't matter who is playing QB ever in any circumstance. The first two games of the season, Bryce was standing in the pocket with time missing throws left and right. We were running the ball well, but even the gimme throws Canales was setting up, Bryce was missing. Then you start Dalton, boom easy win at Las Vegas. By week four's end, three of our best defenders are seriously injured, center injured, 2nd best veteran WR hurt, and best veteran WR quitting on the team.  Canales is a rookie head coach, and he definitely has had some see what sticks moves. But players are being schemed open, the rookies are progressing nicely, and you have the albatross of some terrible lack of talent to phase out. I give him credit alone for pulling Mingo, Thomas, and going with the better/younger producing players. The scheme is better, he just needs better players and I am not going to write him off until he gets more talent, starting with QB!
