Sporting News Panthers Preview

Honestly, anyone who thinks that we are going to pick #1 again next season (if there IS a season this year) is an absolute moron and should have their credentials revoked. Carolina was VERY unlucky last year as far as injuries to key players, and we had a QB that was literally worse than almost anything I've ever seen in my life.

Now we have Ron Rivera, an entirely new staff, Cam Newton, and a healthy defense. Last place my ass.

I read the article in its entirety and didn't see where the journalist said we would be picking first again next draft. All it said was that he expected us to finish last in our division because we are in the hardest division in football and have a new coach.

Maybe I missed something.

You're right - that comment is in the full NFL season preview - not the one linked.

Ha! The biggest problem is gone.

I expect mediocrity this season. Somewhere from 6-10 to 9-7. I think we have potential to be 2nd or 3rd in the division this year though, if we come out swinging and have a little bit of luck. Not likely, but possible. 3rd or 4th in the division is much more likely. Either way, anything is an improvement over that wreck of a season last year. I'm just excited to see the new and improved Panthers on the field.

To play Devil's Advocate, you're saying we have a new coach who has never been a head coach before, a QB who many people consider a work in progress, a defense with it's biggest need still glaring along with other holes, a completely new offensive system using players drafted for the old system, a completely new defensive scheme using players drafted for the old scheme, health concerns for arguably our most important linemen, questions whether two of our best offensive weapons from years past will be on the team next year, etc etc etc

You have to take off the homer glasses and put the optimism that's running rampant aside for a minute and look at things from everyone other than Carolina fans' perspective. Things don't look bright.

Sure everything could gel perfectly and we could be one of those first year coach, first year QB success stories or we could struggle.

Flame away.

injuries were not an issue until late in the season. everyone should delete that off their list of why we sucked last year.

QB wasn't even the biggest case.

coaching and playcalling.

We will win 7 games, at worst. Just the new coaching staff alone will inject more energy into this franchise, and so will Cam Newton. We will have the best home field advantage we have ever had during the regular season just because of Cam.

We have a head coach who was a DC last year, has played and coached in several successful schemes and has a well built staff. It is hard to say what will happen but there is just as much to suggest he will be successful as there is to say he will struggle.

We have a quarterback who won't be required to win games simple make some plays and manage the running game. By all accounts he is ahead of where folks thought he would be.

We have a pretty solid defense that played well even when left on the field all game. We have a head coach who had the number 1 defense in the league and a guy in Sean McDermott who knows a lot about the 4-3 which is the same scheme we ran for the past decade. We drafted 2 DTS in the third round and by all accounts will pick up a significant free agent at DT. Otherwise there are holes to fill and depth to create but surely no glaring holes. Even then so many players got to play last year than there should be good depth.

The offensive scheme was awful last year and needed to be scrapped. This system will be better no matter what it is.

The defensive scheme will largely remain the same with a more aggressive approach than Meek's vanilla easy defended line schemes. The defense will be good and the players were drafted to play in this system.

Otah could be the best linemen if he will man up and stop playing so soft. Otherwise, he could easily be replaced or traded this year if he continues to not live up to his potential.

Williams will be signed and Smith will either be here or will be replaced by a FA pick-up that will not be a huge drop-off. The offensive system will be much improved and picking up Shockey and using Rosario and Barnidge to their capacity means we will have more weapons not less.

You need to stop with all the hater posts as if it is some badge of courage to display. Little of what you said has any validity and you have relegated yourself to troll status as far as football is concerned. But then again you seem to want to argue all the time and like people flaming you, so here you go.

    • Some of you who are not sold on Canales are insane. His main purpose was to turn around Bryce Young’s career and he did that. Of all of the teams in the top 10 of the NFL draft, we were the team that was consistently showing the most fight week in and week out. Our players never quit on the season. The offense which he is responsible for took a huge step forward compared to last year, despite the lack of skill talent  that we have. It was our defense that was a mess. That’s one of my critiques on Canales. He should’ve gotten rid of Evero and hired his own DC that shares the same vision. But as a whole, I can’t see how people are not pleased with what Canales did with this team. I’d give him an 9/10
    • One of the first thoughts after the game yesterday was that JT was going to jump all over it. He's been more favorable about BY from the beginning, and so yesterday must've felt like Christmas.
    • Maybe, but they were always going to be an impossible team to accurately mocked right now. They have an absurd amount of cap room, what they need right now will not be what they need come draft day.  They can make multiple big splash signings and even make trades for players who need new contracts and their teams don't want to give it to them. OT and WR might be their two biggest needs right now, but it wouldn't be unreasonable to think they could go into the draft needing neither of them.  I think a LT will be their top FA priority, also think they're going to make a big offer to Higgins, and I could see them being a team in the running to trade for someone like DK Metcalf as they need a WR like him and they have the cap space to give him a big new contract.
