who said anything about spending money just to spend it? of course you find the right fit, otherwise it's a waste of money.

the issue i have is that you can't say you are going to go bargain shopping and then say you are going to find the right fit. as soon as you say you are bargain shopping, that immediately limits your ability to improve the team and find the true "right fit". it's the right fit with an asterisk.

i could understand speaking this way when you are talking to the press or to agents because you don't want to tip your hand, but this isn't the case. this is some leaky faucet within the organization talking to a friend over lunch.

am i suggesting that they go out and just throw money at every shiny big name? nope. what i am saying is that they should go out and get top talent at each of the four major holes (DT, CB, RG, WR). not the top talent, but a top talent. you get one that fits what you are trying to do here, understanding that you may have to open the pocket book wide to get it.

i don't question the team's commitment to getting better, but i do question their commitment to pinching pennies unnecessarily. they put themselves in a great financial position, but for what reason? so they could keep cheap or so they can improve the team? that's what i'm having a bit of trouble with.

am i thinking too much about this? of course, but it's a message board, that's what happens.

i just want the team to do what it takes to get better. they've gotten off to a good start. i don't want them to handcuff themselves when they don't have to by "bargain shopping."

I see your point, if they are talking about Cofield being a high target on their list, then I think this all boils down on arguing over terminology..

CB was on the list, WR as well. he mentioned the main options we wanted that would cost more may stick with their original teams, so we may have to stick to bargain shopping..

Not sure I would even call it bargain shopping... we have numerous holes to fill/depth to be added at DT, CB, and WR. Just because we don't get the top prospect at each of those positions (would be far too expensive in unlikely anyways), doesn't mean we are anxious to sign some unwanted player out of a job somewhere else.

I see us picking someone up at each of those three positions and each one of those guys being a proven starter in this league. Let them battle it out in pre-season and training camp and let the best man win out for the starting gig. This team will get better, and we will have upgraded our roster while most likely being able to resign our core players here already. I'd rather get a talent at a wide array of positions than break the bank for an elite talent at one position of need.

all we can talk about are hypotheticals..

but if we manage to sign Cofield and Eric Wright.. and let's say Edwards. I don't see that as bargain shopping.

I see that as getting what's available. As mentioned, (if true) Joseph, Holmes, VJax, Floyd may stay with their respective teams.

I can't see the Chargers signing both Floyd and VJax, but who knows. Both of those guys are going to be looking for a big pay day.

You are right bleys, all hypotheticals. My dream but somewhat realistic signings would be Cofield, Joseph, and VJax.

VJax will probably be franchise tagged like he was last year, once the lockout is resolved. If he is not then I wouldn't care what the Panthers previous habits are, they need to throw big money his way. VJax is a stud.

Yes, it would be a shame; but it doesn't mean I am going to write the general manager, president, and owner of the Panthers, because it doesn't matter to me one way or the other what they do as long as they win games. That is why I am neither for nor against bargain shopping. Now since we have the money, it would indeed be nice to add a few big name guys, but if we can get mediocre talent or even starter talent out of bargain shopping; then that would be nice too.

You feel they should throw big money at VJax if he is available. That would make you against bargain shopping.

yeah.

cofield is the type of player i want brought in.

@WR, it depends on what happens with smith. if he stays, i want a guy like floyd or braylon edwards. if he's gone then i still want a floyd or edwards, but i would like a sidney rice or santonio holmes brought in as well (neither of which would cost more a year than what we are paying smith). i'm just not at all content with the corps as is.

@CB, i'd feel good about joseph, but there are about 3 or 4 guys i think would be a huge upgrade form what we have had in marshall last year.

@RG...i'd want to go with one of the guys that can play RG and RT if needed. there are a couple of those available that can do both pretty well.

i just see "bargain shopping" and think to the way it was done with fox where we were forced to go after a bunch of cheap underachievers with "potential" hoping that one of them would show to be a hidden gem.

i'd rather the panthers efforts be less scatter shooting hoping to hit their target and more using their resources to find a more proven commodity and acquire them.

i would be very satisfied substituting vjax with floyd, esp. if smith stays.

Don't look to deep into the post and try not to get my words tangled up into what you really want them to mean.

I was simply saying if VJax is available, I would love to see them throw money his way, because he instantly gives the Panthers one of the best receiving corps. in the NFL. However, I am still going under the impression that he is tagged like last year.

If that doesn't help you understand that I don't really care if we bargain hunt or not as long as we win games. Then I will go ahead say I hope we sign Darius Reynaud as our wide out, I think he could be a decent player.

I'm not looking deep into anything. Bargain shopping is not throwing big money at anyone. If you want to throw big money at someone then you are against bargain shopping. It is a pretty simple concept
