Ryan Kalil Supporting Jake Delhomme

Many here have said in the past that it's a waste of a roster spot on a guy you won't play.

In that case we should just let Matt Moore, Jimmy Clausen, and :cam: fight it out in camp (if there is one). Which honestly has been my preference this whole time bc I think the whole "vet QB mentor" thing is overrated.

But if we do go that direction Jake is as good a fit for that role than any other QB that looks like is going to be on the market IMO.

I can see both sides of the argument. I think it does help to have a vet QB to help out. He can relate to the younger guys in ways which a coach can't. At the same time, roster spots are valuable. Using one on a guy who has no chance of seeing the field does seem like a waste when it could be used on someone who could play.

I want Cam, Matt, and Pike as our QBs going into the season. Null isn't under contract and hasn't shown much of anything in his time in the league, and Clausen is Clausen, which doesn't help us or him.

Cam is the future and face of the franchise, Matt is a leader and should/could be a starter in numerous places around the league, and a good one at that, and Pike has great potential IMO.

Just hire him as an asst qb coach or something. No worries about gettin on the field and you can have him mentor all day

I was just thinking the same thing. As some sort of asst. Shula needs to feel safe and happy, so let Jake be the mentor and leader we all believe he would be perfect for.

Just a thought, and GOOO PANTHERS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

If Jake came here and never played a down his presence in the locker room and the example he would set for the younger QBs would be invaluable.

My only fear is old allegiances causing division in that locker room.

if a good few games are lost and the players are frustrated, i could see that being an issue. don't forget that crowd loyalties to jake are probably still there. fans could start calling out to start jake if newton struggles.

that said, i don't see it being the issue with newton that it would have been with moore and clausen. newton seems to be a tougher minded person and has a lot more ability to get and keep guys positive and fired up.

the question is, how would jake respond to having to take a back seat to newton in being the guy that players look to?

Exactly, he already had to take a seat for Moore and McCoy. I'm thinking he may just call it a career and retire.

I'm ok with this simply because Cam is the man now. It's not like the Moore/Delhomme thing where Moore was a journeyman who we all wanted to give him a shot but there could be a potential divide in the locker room between guys. I don't think if Jake came back he would have any misconceptions about his role whatsoever. Add to that the fact that it seems that Cam really earned a lot of the guys' respect at the POTA's, and I don't really see what harm it could do. I honestly don't think he'd command much more of a salary than Moore either.

Cam/Delhomme/Clausen. I'm good with that depth chart.
