Scotch

with regards to ice/water, here's how i drink a few different ones, basically going up the price/quality scale.

40% dewars/60% water, full glass of ice is nice on a warm day

glenlivet with a splash of water and a few rocks

macallan 12 neat or with one piece of ice

clynelish/oban neat, maybe a drop of water

all listed are 10 or 12 year. i'm not spending more than $50 a bottle for something i'll drink 3-4 times a week, so macallan 12 and dewars are my daily drinks.

with regards to blended vs. single malt:

dewars is blended, and its definitely the cheapest of those i mentioned above. but i still think a tall dewars and water is a wonderful thing. and to be honest with you, my absolute favorite scotch is also blend. blows everything else out of the water. usquaebach. unfortunately it's not distributed in nc, sc, ga, or surrounding states. gotta be really sneaky. i've gone to insane lengths to get that stuff.

good thread. happy drinking.

Dewars will do but I need H2O and ice.

My favorite to sip on is Glenfidich 18 or Glenlivet 12. I generally put one or two cubes in with these.

My Canadian in-laws brought down some sh*t to my house once called Grant's Blended and it was horrible.

You will hear a lot of folks bag on blended scotch but the fact is the single-malt craze is relatively new. It's just like everything else: well-made blends are every bit as good as well-made single-malts. Drink what you like.

try some single malts and learn about the different tastes.

My favorite is Laphroaig which is VERY peaty. Many people will not like it.

Try it and compare to MAcallan which is very popular and smooth scotch or something like Dalwhinnie.

Scotch is similar to wine in that if you want to really get into it you will want to learn about the various regions in Scotland and why they taste different...

I drink mine neat or with a single ice cube

Went to my Mom's over Thanksgiving, she had a bottle of 12yo Glenfiddich that had been in her liquor cabinet for at least 15 years. Cabinet was out in teh garage, so it was sort of chilled. I sipped that bottle all night long, got me hooked. I used to be a Jack black guy, but then I stepped up to Gentleman Jack.. After Thanksgiving I realized I need to explore the Scotches quite a bit more... Most excellent thread, thanks OP and thanks for all yous input...
