I have no problem admitting that the monster story had some issues but "light on plot depth" is not really correct. This movie is a throwback, one that even though it's about kids, older kids and adults can enjoy together. Being able to juggle that is hard, and I think the movie does it really well. E.T.s plot was a LOT goofier but it's still an amazing movie. Spielbergs intention is to make you feel something, not provide you with locktight narrative, and this movie is the same kind of thing.

The train wreck was genuinely exciting to see in IMAX, and theres not much out there these days in the way of giant explosion scenes that does that to me anymore.

Soundtrack was great too.

from the previews it looks like Goonies, Close Encounters of the Third Kind, and Cloverfield were thrown into a blender and mixed up, poured into a glass, and presented as a brand new idea...

I'll wait for the DVD... and if Zodiac and Cloverfield are your top two movies, you are severely sheltered...

I've never seen Cloverfield, and I can't remember if I saw Zodiac so either way that's a wash.

You could generalize about the movie and come to the same conclusion Tyler did (by looking at previews). But as with most things, if it was easy to do, everyone would be doing it.

In the movie the main character's mom dies, about a year before mine did. I loved (and still do) building models, was into movies and movie magazines, and hung around with some real characters, so everything about the movie hit home for me on a very personal level - the sets, the cars, the mood, everything about 1979 was done really well. So I can see why I absolutely loved it and why others don't as much.
