I just got back from watching it and I also think it was a prequel for Cloverfield.

possible spoiler: There was the warning that since the humans had mistreated the alien and wouldnt help him get home then he would treat them all the same, which would end up bad for mankind. Plus, the alien looked like a version of the Cloverfield monster

It also reminded me of ET on steroids.

Abrams (or someone connected with the film) said about the Cloverfield monster that we don't know why it's here or whether it is scared or not and that's why it's destroying everything. Which is exactly what the Super 8 monster was doing. It was just trying to go home.
