Peppers/Cassel Trade Talks being whispered.

i was listening to sirius nfl on the way home from work yesterday as usual. those guys said this trade has a good possibility when talking to some pats fan.

I like sirius NFL, but most of their analyst are parrots. What they know of Carolina is based on rumor and perception, they know very little how the organization works. These are the same people who year after year say the Panthers will draft a QB or a TE in the first round. Frankly the average poster on this board is more knowledgeable of the situation than them.

I find it unlikely because the Panthers are already quite close to the salary cap, which is 4 million higher this year. The decisions we will be making in the near future will involve significant savings, otherwise we won't be able to sign our draft picks.

Someone correct my math: trading Peppers for Cassell would save us ~$2 million this year?

If so, we'd have only 4 million offseason dollars to wheel-and-deal, after having lost a pro-bowl DE, and a pro-bowl DT the year before.

That our FO would put both our defense and our bean counters in such a position is not reasonably possible.

.

Not necessarily, the trade wouldn't go through without signing Cassel to a long term deal. The Panthers would probably try to set up something back loaded counting them somewhere in the 6-8 million range against this years cap.

I agree, I bet nobody on here would be crying if cassel joined us with a backup QB salary and challenged Delhomme for the starting spot.

That would be miraculous given that he's currently a franchise player.

I can understand people not being able to let go of the playoff game just yet and their reaching for straws, but they need to come back to reality. Trading Peppers and spending 15 million on a QB that never even played in a college game and has had one season in a system something akin to a West Coast offense that he was able to study under for years is something much like insanity...

As good a summary as I've seen.

Agree with CP96 though. It's not like insanity. It is insanity.

Patriots beat writer Mike Reiss wonders if Mike Vrabel's trade could be part of a larger deal including Matt Cassel.

Now that would be a doozy. Reiss is one of the most well-respected beat writers in the country, and is usually very cautious to publish anything resembling speculation. He rightly points out that we have no idea what the compensation in the Vrabel trade is.

per Rotoworld...

Its coming people... stay tuned!

something big involving the pats is coming up. They've got a taker for Cassel and I hope it isn't us. I wouldn't mind trading peppers there though for draft picks.

Well if that's true they've been blowing some heavy smoke on Brady's status

The tea leaves are saying the Chiefs are on his tale.
