Rivera remains upbeat during lockout

Clausen (I know a lot on here won't believe this) will have a good preseason. We will get offers for him. Yes, we drafted a QB #1, but moore has the experience and would not be controversial as a backup. Clausen will be.

Heres another article that expands on what Rivera said about Smith:

Rivera is not sure what to think of Steve Smith's situation. The mercurial wideout, coming off the least productive season of his 10-year career, has indicated he might be ready to move on.

Rivera said "it's not a foregone conclusion" the Panthers will move Smith, who is signed through the 2012 season. He said their conversation prior to the lockout left Rivera uncertain about Smith's intentions.

"We had a great conversation. He was honest. He was forthright," Rivera said. "He did kind of leave me at a point where I was wondering exactly where does he want to go with this? I will wait until we sit down and talk when the time comes."

Personally I hope they tell him they are going to build the offense around him and for him to man up and be a team guy. If you want to be a leader then be one. Otherwise they will trade him but to the team that makes the most sense for the Panthers, not Smith.

There's a part of me that like the idea of telling Smith to get over himself, keep his mouth shut, and play football 'til his contract is up.

My speculation, though, is that Smith isn't interested in being a leader of men. He's interested in winning and his own stats these days. He's staring out at the twilight of his career and sees that he just may not make the Hall of Fame. Hell, the guy may end up not even beating out Muhsin Muhammad in total career receiving yards, for cryin' out loud.

He's probably frustrated, which will only exacerbate any friction there might be, potentially causing to act like a jerk, which he is prone to do.

I only want him on this team if he feels passionate about being a part of the team. Otherwise, I see no point in having him around. If his heart ain't in it, then we can't count on him.

In that case, trade him to the team that offers the most for him, still need to do what is best for the team.

Another article from the same visit:

http://www.fayobserver.com/articles/2011/06/05/1099288

Q: When this thing is over, obviously, free agency will be open. What are the big things you need to take care of right away?

A: “Well, I think there are a couple of positions we most certainly need to make sure there are some good veteran depth there. We’re going to look at some of the defensive positions. We made a couple of moves here in the draft, but we’d still like to see if we can find a veteran defensive line guy who could help us. You look at our linebackers and we’ve got a couple of guys who are coming back after injuries, so we’ve got to see if there’s potentially if there’s a veteran guy we could bring in. The same thing with the defensive back position. Offensively, we feel pretty comfortable with our offensive line and our running back situation. We’ve got to resolve the wide receiver position and see how all that unfolds once this is done. Our quarterback position is what it is right now. We’ve got to talk about where we want to head as far as the veteran back up is concerned.’’

Q: Are you planning the wide receiver position without Steve Smith?

A: “We’re planning, when this all breaks, to sit down and visit and come to a decision. One thing I did tell Steve is we’ll make a decision we feel is best for the team, and at the same time keeping in serious consideration what’s best for him as well. I don’t want to put words in his mouth. It might be in his mind (to leave), it might not. I do know we had a great conversation. He was honest and and forthright. He did kind of leave me at a point where I was wondering exactly where did he want to go with this. But I’ll wait until we can sit down and talk when the time comes.’’

It will be interestingly to see how it plays out given that none of the coaches have any history with any of the players. It would be interesting to know what Rivera really thinks about Smith.

I think Smith may appreciate the same candidness and work ethic of Riviera. If the CBA is worked out, I'd like to see the two of them work together for a few weeks before Smith is traded.

It's looking like Rivera is making sure the defense is at least top 15 material for next year, I agree since that side of the ball is the easiest to shore up with a new coach.

Wouldn't suprise me if we picked up Cooper or Burnett from the Chargers.

EDIT: sorry rayzor just read your post about Cooper and Burnett wasnt trying to copy :o

 just means it makes a lot of sense.

if he is given the ability to bring in top FA talent at CB and DT, i think we can easily have a top 15 defense next year.

one other charger i would love to see us bring in is eric weddle. i like martin and godfrey, but they aren't near the talent weddle is. doesn't matter if weddle lines up at SS or FS, he'd be an upgrade.

crap...while i'm dreaming we could go after danieal manning as well and just upgrade safety all across the board. manning might actually be easier to get because he turned down an extension with the bears last fall. he might be ready to move on. as far as weddle is concerned, it might depend on if he wants to follow his coach or not.
