Goodell still says fans want 18 games

There's really nothing to work out. The owners want a better deal, and the players don't want to give anything up. You can't just talk that out. So they are going to have to be told by a court who has the advantage.
players want a rookie salary cap.

plenty to talk out actually. CBA was going to be coming to an end anyway. all of these issues would still have to be hashed out. owners knew that they weren't going to do the same thing so they just got an earlier out when they had opportunity.

delaying things just would have prolonged the inevitable. they would still be going through this...just a year or two down the road.

. . . I never said the CBA was going to last forever, mentioned the owners opting out, or said the players are against a rookie salary cap.

All I'm saying is the owners want a better deal, and the players don't want to give up anything, so this is going to remain unresolved until someone else tells them what they have to do.

meh...grown ups can get a deal done without having to resort to litigation. courts are an unnecessary crutch for solving problems.

courts could have easily been avoided if you have people willing to talk. if upshaw was still alive and running it or a non-lawyer would have been voted to head the nflpa, they most likely would have gotten something worked out that didn't involve the courts. thats all smith knows.

I see what you are saying and wish that they had been able to work something out, but I don't see what talking does.

"We want a better deal."

"We don't want to move at all."

I don't see how you resolve that in talks. It's either a better deal or it's not. Also I don't know if Upshaw would have done a lot different as he is reported to have said things along the lines of the owners will try to come back and get a better deal, and you can never give anything back. That stance is why we are where we are.

you may not see how you can resolve it, but it gets done. it has for centuries.

2 parties can always work things out without having to resort to the courts. it's a cop out.

people have gone to the table with a lot more at stake and less willingness to budge and still been able to work out a deal.

i will keep on saying that it's in the courts primarily because that is the only way demaurice smith knows how to deal with things. something would have been worked out if the courts were seen as the only place to resolve the conflict by one of the parties.

It's interesting, I'm a PSL holder. I can speak for myself and repeat what I've heard from the PSL holders who sit around me.

We have never said that we want a 16 game season, what we have said is that we are sick of paying full prices for exhibition games. The NFL interpretation and spin of that statement you can determine for yourselves.

I mean, my God can you imagine sitting in charlotte (or any Southern city) in 100 degree weather on an August Sunday afternoon, better have night games that time of year.

majority of people I've ever come across understand that 18 games is not a benefit but more likely a way to keep your team from reaching a Superbowl.

it's human nature to want any bones that you can get thrown to you.. 18 games has a much higher chance of failure for your team, however you slice it.

From the article...

Also pretty much no denying the idea is almost universally hated by the players.

Talking conference calls...our team sends out surveys every year (as imagine all teams do)...just possibly that is where they are getting their information.

As far as players are against it...has anyone been on a job where people where let go and your responsibility is increased to keep yours???

This is one of those career choices where you know the consequences... firefighters know they may get burned, police know they may get shot, as does military, how about private employees like oil riggers and coal miners? They don't start at a young age in peewee/high school/college ...at what age does football start??? No surprise their chosen career choice can be dangerous. Not sure why, because someone is on t.v. makes them so much more special? Arguably all the profession I just mentioned are much more important/needed and dangerous, but make considerably less...w/o rules being set (like they are now) to "protect" them...
