Jake Delhomme as a GM

Mr. Scot

Recommended Posts

I think the bottom line is this...

Hurney has good points to his history and bad points. Some awesome moves have been sullied by some terrible moves.

But all that... ALL OF IT... is ancient history with us taking Cam Newton #1 overall.

If Cam comes in here and blows this motherfuger up (Like I think he can), then Hurney will be set for years to come, and he will go down in our history as the best GM we've ever had.

If Cam is a bust and looks like garbage, Hurney will be sent down the road, and will be mocked for years.

Hurney passed on Flacco for Thomas Davis if I remember correctly. Davis is a good LB, but who knows how solid his knee will be after back to back injuries. But we needed someone to cover Vick at that point.

i would check that, if i were you.

I don't get any of the criticism, as Fiz pointed out, the Brown and AE trades were almost out of necessity... There may have been more motivation behind the AE trade as he was a local guy... But, he wasn't given a chance by our genius head coach.

And I don't get the 2-7 talk. The only round Hurney has consistently missed on is the 2nd. Colbert, Shelton, Jarrett, etc. The rest he's gotten picks that other teams could only dream of - James Anderson was a 3rd rounder who was waiting to start since probably his 2nd year, and he should've been - you see what he did. Guys like Hardy, Jeff King, so many OLs and DLs.

I don't get it.

As I once heard, the draft isn't about just finding a megastar to carry your team, it's more about filling out your entire roster with quality players... It's really about hitting on those late rounds so you have starters and role players from about 5-53. Hurney has done that - STFU.

Really, the first ballsy pick he's made is Newton

Beason was a projected second rounder by most sites, something not many fans remember. He traded up for Gamble, and he's a top ten corner in the league.

I'd be interested in how you defined ballsy though.

Charles Godfrey sucks btw. He's basically the DeAngelo Hall of safeties

yeah no

"Projected second rounders" go at the end of the first literally every single year.

The move to trade back for Beason was probably the best Hurney has ever made. He gets credit for that. He also gets credit for identifying Beason. Taking him in the 20s? Not really

Making trades out of necessity is a terrible excuse. That's called backing yourself into a corner. If the Peppers situation hadnt been massively fubar'd by himself then he isn't "forced" into taking Brown. Plus, taking a DE there WASN'T a necessity. Every year good teams ignore draft pundits' "needs" to take players they believe in or weaknesses they have identified better. The Patriots are an example of this. Remember all the years we were torn apart for ignoring TE and Safety when Fox was able to get acceptable production out of scrubs at those positions? Yea

Fiz you're usually smart. How you have a blind eye to Hurney's terrible mediocrity as GM is baffling. Talk about how we only have a couple bad moves to point to all you want. What are the GOOD moves? Beason. That's it. No one else outside of this fanbase trumpets the other first round picks or any diamonds in the rough found by Hurney. The fact that this FO jacked off about using the "Richard Marshall strategy" (known to the rest of the world as BPA) for a couple years in the middle rounds only for the guy they named it after to lack any progress as a player after his first year that they're willing to let him leave for nothing at the end of his rookie contract pretty much sums up this front office

Wharton, kalil, king, Marshall, Godfrey, hangartner, Schwartz, Anderson, Connor, munnerlyn, haye, Johnson, suck, my, dick

Clausen was the best player available by a mile. It was too good an opportunity to pass up. Pike was a late round flier who gives a fug.

Wharton - solid player with flexibility that we got some LT years out of but ultimately every team has guys of his talent level from the mid rounds

Kalil - good pick but when you take a center in round 2 you're supposed to hit it, same with RB/LB in round 1. Need to extend him already, get out of here with that franchise tag ****.

Marshall - 1 contract player and we never won anything while he has here. Seemed a good pick initially but ultimately isn't

Godfrey - come on

Hangartner - org filler who we let go but still not bad for the 6th round. but again, every team has JAGs like this who show some promise in limited action then leave in FA because trutfully they arent that good

Schwartz - see Hangartner

Anderson - opposite of Marshall. Didn't show much early but has developed well. Need to sign him to a second contract for it to be a great pick

Connor - another solid pick but really, stocking up on talented LBs with his skillset isn't hard.

Munnerlyn - overrated but the fact that he's rated at all is good for a 7th round flier

Haye - yea the FO's evaluation of this guy was so awesome that they cut him and Tony Brown so they could go on to anchor the Titan's D-line during a playoff year. Great job

Johnson - great pick. was young coming out so the development time he needed isn't surprising. massive failure if he doesn't sign an extension (which he seems open to, so fine)

the clausen pick was clearly because he thought he was going in the top 10 and didn't bother evaluating him. you knew clausen sucked at the time (as did anyone with eyes) so i cant imagine a serious defense of this

if this is your "awesome job hurney great gm" list i'm baffled. the guy who said hurney's career will ultimately be judged by newton is probably right but his career to date suggests that even if Cam pans out that it's a crapshoot whether or not he surrounds him with a good team

I guess you are saying delhomme as a qb is the same as hurney as a gm? If so in all reality hurney isn't going anywhere. So its a moot point.

Pretty much. I didn't really think it was that difficult to get

Both have had their moments of greatness and moments of whattheheckness. With Delhomme, the bad stuff eventually caught up to him. That could wind up happening to Hurney too, though I'm not predicting it will.

Bottom line: I expect Hurney, like Delhomme, will always reside somewhere in the area of "average to above average". Obviously his profile could rise or fall based on this latest draft, but I suspect like prior draft, this one will turn out to be a mixed bag.

In your opinion, is that good enough?

Mr. Scot is bored.

Quite so, admittedly :(

Not the best scot thread. I'll give him a pass though.

The idiots who think hurney is the sole man responsible for our drafts, good or bad, are the fuging idiots.

Hurney likely doesn't have a ton of direct input (read: scouting) on the players we select. Especially past the first round. However, the work of the people under him is ultimately his responsibility. If they suck, they need to be replaced.

Which they were. The jury is still out on the new crew. IMO, the expiration date on Hurney expired with Fox. Richardson didn't agree. We'll see how it plays out

I could be wrong rayzor, that was a while ago. I seem to remember Flacco and Rodgers on the board when we took Davis. Rodgers might be who panthers55 was talking about.

I think you're mixing Davis up with Jonathan Stewart (re: Flacco) but Aaron Rodgers was indeed still on the board when Thomas Davis was taken.

The most direct competition for Davis in the draft pool that year was Derrick Johnson.

Not Flacco, Rodgers. Thanks rayzor, don't know why I was thinking Flacco. So we passed on Rodgers for Davis. Jstew is awsome, I was worried about his foot when he was first drafted but it hasn't slowed him down that I can tell. Don't know why I got those two mixed up.
