Rivers likes idea of Smith to San Diego...

can't agree with that at all.. he was one of few I actually ever saw pumping Clausen up before games.

you, and other people, seem to focus on the few things Smitty could have done right rather than all the good he has contributed..

by no means has he been the perfect role model, but even so, in his times of fuging up, he's always manned up and admitted he was wrong. hard to say that about anyone, much less football players of his stature..

I thought it was just wrong, for him not to at least attend the workouts when he is still UNDER CONTRACT.

with his future being unknown, I can't say I blame him.. and if it's true that if an injury occurs that players aren't covered since these are not sanctioned by the NFL or the teams, I don't think I would risk an injury at his age..

even if it's just being cautious over a freak accident..

of course, it's late and I"m tired.. I don't feel like looking into all this.. just off the top of my head, this sticks out as a good reason to do whatever I would feel comfortable with, everything considered..

Everyone else is risking their health why can't Smith? He's selfish that's why, Smith didn't think about his safety when he got injured playing flag football. And i'm pretty sure it's just gonna be no-contact drills.

This is what gets me. If we trade Smitty I KNOW without a shadow of doubt Smitty will BLOW-UP with a QB like Rivers. Minimum 12-1500 yds and 10 tds. MININUM.

Those of you that think he has lost a step, too old, cancer, blah, blah, blah either fail to realize these down years aren't his doing. It isn't like his performance fell off, the QB did.

We all criticize Jake for throwing into double coverage even occassion triple coverage, only to see Smitty coming down with the ball. You can say alot about Jake.. But he knew how special Smitty is/was. Rivers does too. And will bust a nut if SD pulled a trade off for him.

Stop thinking our BEST receiver is washed up. Get him in the unauthorized mini camp and work with Cam. Having Smitty in our offense will make NEWTON that much more dangerous.

The place for Smitty ideally is in a place where there are more threats wearing WR gloves than just him and there is a vet QB who can read a defense and hit the open target.

Right now SD resembles that place more than Carolina but to be fair we are not sure just what we have in Carolina right now and cannot rule out completely that we don't have a place for him to thrive.

Lots of decisions to be made yet. Lots of unknowns. His clock is ticking. Our franchise has a new gem of an investment to protect.

The safe thing would be to ship him but we all believe he will blow up wherever he lands and the deal will go down in Carolina "bad deal" infamy along with Muhammad and Witherspoon.

I agree that for Smitty trading him to a contender like San Diego would be in his best interest.

On the other hand San Diego may not be interested in picking up a 7 million price tag for this year and close to 9 million for next year. Secondly, like you say, we may be better than the 2-14 team we put out there last year and Newton may surprise some folks. We hold Smith's rights and shouldn't be itching to trade him IMO. Now if they want to talk a swap where we get Jackson and they get Smitty and a pick for next year, then we might be talking. But if we trade him for a future third or fourth rounder at this point, it should go down as one of the worst trades we have ever made.
