NFL coaches file brief to support players

This is absolutely zero surprise, and means nothing for the lockout or the status of the NFL.

The NFL Coaches Association was fostered by the NFLPA* when it started up. The two groups are very, very closely related. Hell... the NFLPA gave the NFLCA some of it's office space in it's infancy to get going.

So this means little.

This organization has talked about unionizing in the past. If they go this route, head coaches, and most likely assistant coaches, will not be part of the union as they are considered part of the management team.

So this is just lower level coaches throwing a brief out there. It has little meaning, outside of a bit of PR.

I've read this as well. The NFLPA offered several years ago to represent position and assistant coaches. Head coaches and coordinators were not in the group to be part of a union.

We need to form a Fans Association and file suit.

An Amicus Brief exactly like that has been filed. For some reason I'm not surprised it hasn't turned up on this forum.

Sadly, while googling for it, I stumbled upon this thread on saints report, and holy hell you people are dumber than statistically the dumbest state with an nfl team. People there can read, and spell, and use grammar. They can cite why they think things instead of just pulling poo out of their ass. This allows people to effectively argue with them.

You hicks are worse than Saints fans. And Highlandfire isn't even here yet.

I agree that the basic problem here is greed, and it is petty.

But the bottom line is not really that the coaches and player are sick of the owner's BS...

There is no "bottom line" to all this, as it is complicated and has a large number of factors:

We are in an economic depression that by all accounts is not turning around as quickly as anyone had hoped, and even shows signs of worsening. The owners OWN a NFL based business, and have long and short term goals that they feel they need to accomplish in regard to cash flow and this unended economic situation. A major expense for their teams is player pay.

Players are operating from a standpoint of "Don't give anything back that you've gotten.", which is something Upshaw preached before his death. They don't want to lose their pay percentage cut of total revenue... period.

The Players are digging in their heals. The Owners are digging in their heals. The fact this has gone to court is REALLY, REALLY bad. The court systems WILL NOT RESOLVE THIS, because if the owners lose in court (and they probably will, as the courts favor employees in this country), they could potentially shut the whole league down and reform under new labor stipulations, or simply fractionalize the NFL into two parts again.

I've been saying this for months... but we could be watching the end of the NFL... at least as we know it.

I agree with most of what you said. Not sure about the last line though. I do think we will see the NFL again, and it will not be that different from what it was before. Might take a while though.

If the coaches are locked out, can they attend the player-only workouts? This might be a blessing in disguise.

Coaches aren't locked-out. And no they can't attend workouts or they will face a major fine.

I was actually commenting on one of the hypotheticals. If the owners were to get pissed and lock out coaches because of this filed brief, then the coaches could interact with the players.

Okay, gotcha. I'm sure there's a little awkwardness in the FO's with this brief.

Here is some info on why owners have to draw the line in the sand...used the Packers as an example (because they are publicly owned and thus do have to release financial statements).

http://www.startribune.com/sports/vikings/122267884.html

Packers' profits fall

According to their financial statement, the Packers' operating profit fell 71 percent in four years, from $34.2 million in the budget year ending March 31, 2007, to $9.8 million in the year ending March 31.

The major reason for the big drop in profit was player costs. For instance, the Packers' player costs jumped from $110.7 million to $160.8 million this past year.

The Vikings

The Wilfs now show a profit only because they received about $25 million a year in revenue sharing, money contributed by the big profit-making clubs, such as Washington, the two New York teams and Dallas.

However, such owners as Jerry Jones of the Cowboys and Dan Snyder of the Redskins are fighting to eliminate the revenue sharing and, to date, it has been a big battle with a close vote among the owners to keep it.

I still think they should get new players just to show the current players just how lucky they are when they're at home watching the games instead of playing them.

congrats highlandfire you have the same opinion as someone half your age.

    • Heels let another team go up 20 on them but this time they complete the comeback. HD never seems to have his team ready but he makes great halftime adjustments. Powell played the majority of the second half and his defense was the difference along with his big three pointer to give the Heels the lead for good. Trimble and Davis were also spectacular. Carolina can’t let Auburn get out to a 20 point lead though, they won’t be able to come back from that.
    • I don't think there is much of a chance we go wr in the first round.  If Young continues to play fairly well, our choice will likely dl, lb, or maybe a slight chance at ol.
