Newton to take part in player-organized workouts

So I can't find the story where it mentions Dorsey and Weinke going with him to Charlotte, so don't get angry at those of us who read the article in the OP and responded to it. Considering I thought Weinke was now working with Ponder too at IMG and the OP article does not mention that Dorsey and Weinke are joining Cam Newton, why exactly is my concern about who is running the offensive side of things "chicken little logic"?

I'd love it if they were in fact bringing Dorsey and Weinke there. I even said the offense should go down to IMG to work with them. Either way, I'm glad they're working together if that is the case.

I read lots of articles so I don't know where I saw it but whatever, doesn't really matter. I don't get angry over a message board so I don't know where you got that false impression.

The chicken little logic is that you think he might get injured at OTAs which are glorified exercise sessions yet no one is worried that he could get hurt training at IMG or playing basketball in the offseason or driving to the stadium. Smith got hurt last playing flag football. Anyone worried about that versus sone walk throughs and conditioning drills. Somehow I don't see threads about that....... It is making a mountain out of a molehill because his agent said it was a concern. Try on this logic. That is just more hype from his agency because now they can say despite the significant risk of injury to his personal self, newton will risk it all to be with his teammates in order to show his team how dedicated he is. For the record he doesn't have a letter of agreement but you can guarantee he has a huge insurance policy in case of injury and even if he got hurt before he played, the Panthers would still pay big bucks and sign him long term. Unless it was career ending, it wouldn't mean much at all. With a salary cap likely, his salary is pretty much set. So yeah it is chicken little thinking. And if they don't have some level of professional coaching at the sessions, how exactly do you think they are going to pull it off. It isn't exactly rocket science.

Despite any injury concerns, remember that Newton has several endorsement deals (represented by IMG),including a reported richest ever for a rookie from UnderArmor (who is paying the tab at IMG). These companies need two things to happen, for Cam to be productive ASAP and to be a good corporate citizen. While these monies can bring distractions, they also bring expectations that keep his actions in line, and he appears to be doing all the right things. Charlotte will have it's first nationally marketed athlete since LJ's grand mama commercials. This should all be a positive for the Panthers, since the quicker Cam ceases being a kid and becomes a professional, the more it eliminates cheesy actions and keeps his focus on improving.

I never said injury, his agent said injury. My feeling is it wasn't as useful from a developmental stand point because we don't know who is going to be running the offense, and at IMG he actually has people who DO know the offense, who are professionals and who can develop a quarterback. Nobody on our team can do that, and while they may be hiring professional coaches we don't know who. That is why I'd rather this have just taken place there, but hey, whatever - I understand the value of him working with teammates too, though, and I know why he'd do this. I just hope you are right that he has Weinke and Dorsey along.

Obviously, if Weinke and Dorsey are there, the various posts in this thread about wondering if this is better than working with Weinke and Dorsey are irrelevant because he'll still be working with them. But the majority of us aren't really commenting on that afaik.

As to the injury thing though, I agree that the risk is unlikely to be any higher at this group training session than at IMG.

You and TRD totally miss the point of why he is going. It is not to learn the playbook or develop his skills. It is to develop his rapport with his teammates, get a chance to throw to his wide receivers, and establish himself as a leader on the team. He needs to go there so he isn't seen as a prima donna who thinks he is better than everyone else because he was the first pick in the draft ( a distinction no other panther can make) or is above working out informally with his teammates. The reality is that he risks a lot more not going based on how he is perceived by his teammates than any potential for injury.

You say you understand that is important he work with his teammates but I question that or you wouldn't still be arguing. Anyone who has played or coached sports at any level knows that team chemistry is one of the most important intangibles you have and it can very delicate. This is the way he builds team chemistry with the team which for a quarterback is one of the most important things he will do. How his teammates receive him will go a long way to determining how hard they fight for him on the field.

We know it'll build some chemistry, we're arguing whether it's BEST for him or not to go. It's the right thing to do, but is it what is best?

There is a difference. It's basically just a meet and greet instead of getting any real work in.

I don't think you understand. I said I had reservations about it and wished that it was happening under the tutelege of Weinke/Dorsey/someone with experience in the offense. That's why when you said it was, I was excited until I read more articles and found out that if that's true, not only has the majority of the news outlets reporting the story heard about it, it is totally contrary to many of the things they are saying.

This entire 'argument' started again because my point was that I wasn't worried about injury and that it is totally legitimate to wonder who the hell is going to be leading the offense when we have no veterans versed in it. This isn't Drew Brees taking his receivers out to a field to practice.
