WRs drop percentage

When you break out a position by a single stat you can get some wildly inaccurate stats. I'm certainly surprised that there's 10 "catchable" balls that he dropped. What that stat doesn't speak to is the amount of double teams and coverage rolls Steve gets any given Sunday. Steve Smith's speed and route running ability forces defensive coordinators to change their protections just to try to shut him down. That opens up opportunities elsewhere on the field. To just take the "drops" stat and say that Smitty has fallen off, is a long stretch in my book.

As Rayzor said, it's purely a statistic to show who dropped the most passes thrown in their direction (and the least). It's a pretty credible analysis and does give an indication on who was the most reliable.

Just for arguments sake, they will obviously give a receiver who is fighting for a jump ball in double/triple coverage a bit of leeway way they determine a 'catchable ball'. Plus, look at Fitzgerald...

Any article that doesn't have Roddy White in the top 5 and has Braylon Edwards in the top 10 has no credibility. I would like to see what he categorizes as a drop. Roddy White dropped his first pass of the year in week 15 or 16.

There is no arguing that Steve Smith dropped a lot of passes last year. There is also no arguing that Steve Smith has great hands - last year was an outlier.

Please, don't be ridiculous. They would be judging each player on the same measuring stick so whilst you disagree with it it doesn't change the facts that he didn't bring in a lot of catchable balls.

Plus Steve has never has elite hands and has always put his fair share on the ground. That said this year was significantly worse.

It's also not 'he', but 'they'. They have a team of 6-8 guys I think going through each game.

Yep, he had a bad year and a bad QB. It also shows the worst droppers from 2008-2010 and he isn't at the bottom.

My initial thought when you said this was that possibly his concentration wasn't there simply because of the situation. Smith is at his best when he is ridiculously competitive, so take that away and he obviously isn't the same player.

btw...both lance moore and braylon edwards are FAs this year. i doubt either guy gets signed by their team.

Lance Moore is likely gone, Braylon Edwards SHOULD be let go. if i am the Jets, i re-sign Holmes (who is much better than Edwards) and keep Cotchery and i think they are interested in Moss, so they should get him to a short term deal. As for Edwards, for some reason i see Washington making a play for him, but if not, Miami and likely Carolina. I am not high on Edwards, but he does have size and is a number one reciever if he catches the ball better.

i think edwards fits the system well. big receiver and he's improved his skills as time has gone on. he's got familiarity with chud and chud with him. not sure that helps things, but it's sure going to have an impact on whether he comes or not.

i wouldn't object to it at all. i wouldn't consider him an upgrade over smith, but i'm not sure he would be much of a downgrade either after what smith did last year.

i'd rather have sidney rice, tbh, but edwards would be ok.

lance moore would help in the slot. might actually be better than smith there, actually.

I know he's staying in Denver, but Eddie Royal has so much potential and they really don't utilize him well there instead more Lloyd & Gaffney. I would love to try and get him if he ever becomes available down the road.

When you look at the number of 'catchable passes' Smith ranks 4th lowest from that universe of 30 receivers (I don't have the sub to get the whole list). Whenever your opportunities are limited, each drop is more statistically significant. However, I think you missed my point entirely.

A receiver is more than just the 'good hands' guy. He has a responsibility to read the defense just like the QB, he has to run block on the misdirection, etc. If your receiver is explosive enough, he will force the defensive coordinator to change his defense to more effectively cover that threat and that opens up opportunities elsewhere on the field. The dropped pass stat is important for Fantasy Football geeks, but it isn't determinative in real life. Our desire to retain Smitty will not be determined by this stat, nor should it be.

Over a three year period, Braylon edwards dropped about 15%--that is about 1 in every 7 catachable balls. OVERRATED.

braylon edwards targets/receptions/drops

2008: 138/55/19

2009: 94/45/6

2010: 102/53/4 (worth noting that stats, inc. has him only dropping 2)

anyone seeing a trend here?

sure, you look at a 3 year stretch and throw all the numbers in a blender and it doesn't look pretty. you take each year on it's own merit and see whats going on and...well...i'm impressed with the growth.

really odd seeing branndon lloyd and esp. braylon edwards at the top.

Don't want either. Edwards is just overrated, and Moore is the whiniest crybaby in the division. He pouts after every single play. You can see him do it in on TV, but when you see a game live is when it's really bad. He runs and cries and pouts to the refs and screams and freaks out when they don't throw the flag on literally almost every passing play. I have literally seen him do this live twice-against us and the 49ers, and I see him do it on TV all the time. He's a total girl and I don't want him here.

people keep on saying that braylon edwards is overrated, but the last couple years he's really gone quite a ways in improving himself and living up to whatever hype is there.

the dude is a good receiver. pay attention to what he has done since '08.
