Antibiotics

The doctor gave me Cephalexin for my thumb for prevention of infection. My wound isn't infected but he said it could get infected.

I didn't get it filled because I'm not all about taking an antibiotic for prevention. But now I'm wondering if I should get it filled & take it. Maybe I'll just call my GP.

Do you take antibiotics everytime the doctor gives them to you? It seems like to me they dish them out to people way too often when they aren't needed.

With the MRSA out there and other stuff going on...I'd just do it.

You do a lot of stuff with your hands which is why you wash them constantly. If it were your chest or somewhere that's not constantly exposed and touching things like lightswitchs and doorknobs that EVERYONE touches...I'd be less concerned.

It's a thumb. An opposable one at that. Take the meds.

I've actually encountered quite the opposite... I have a bad sinus infection once or twice a year and if I go to the Dr it's like pulling teeth now to get them to give you an antibiotic. Which in my case is the only thing that will help me. I know a lot of people don't follow instructions and don't take the whole prescription (like my wife :( ) but I always do.

In the case of a cut like that, I'm kinda surprised that they gave you an antibiotic... a good cleaning after the wound then keeping it clean should keep it OK.

how deep is the cut?

wouldn't peroxide be just as efficient?

I was told that peroxide is not good for wounds. Not sure if it's true or not. I use Betadine to clean wounds these days.

See, that's what I started thinking about last night and then I ended up having a dream that my thumb got infected and it had to be amputated.

I had the same experience in March when I had a sinus infection. I went for antibiotics and doc told me he thinks a good nasal decongestant and using a neti pot 4 times a day (1 tsp baking soda & 1 tsp kosher salt per pint of warm water) was more effective than antibiotics in most cases. And sure nuff, I did what he said and I was better in like 3 days!

It's not so much the infection you get in your thumb...if it gets in your bloodstream it's just dangerous.

Not to freak you out, but a buddy of mine got really bad poison ivy. No biggie right? Well...your skin is your first line of defense against infection. He got MRSA through the wounds and it traveled all over his body. Almost lost an eye and had to have multiple surgeries on it. Lost 50lbs and was in the hospital for weeks fighting it off. Messed him up royally. I treat hand wounds (deep ones) with a bit more respect nowadays.

    • Honestly, it wasn't on him last game. There are many other reasons that come before Bryce. Dave Canales is really starting to worry me. I mean there are glaring issues that can't be excused. I said back when the whole Rico/Chubba thing happened. I said right then that you cannot have a coach that handled those 4 or 5 games the way he did. I get it, most thought that he was trying to throw games, which was not wrong thinking because of how bad it was. The decisions right before half. The strict "Chubba gets this drive and Rico gets the next." It's seeming like a lot of our backups are the better talent, so he cant evaluate talent. Not calling a quarterback sneak because of size. Small quarterback have a different type of advantage, just not as good as a large quarterback, but still doable. Then he doesn't even explain why he didn't put Dalton in there (saying it would give away a quarterback sneak is...just stop). I honestly think he forgot about putting in Dalton. There are so many others that I'd have to re-watch the games to remember.  I could make a whole other post on that defensive game plan...absolutely awful. And a quick petition...see the quote above, can we please ban these weirdos and try to clean this place up. This is peak reddit right here and these losers will destroy the board. I couldn't make it though 3 pages because these morons post more than anyone else. These are the perpetual online freaking weirdos banned from getting too close to schools reddit mod types. Get these losers out of here. You got these freaks posting a ton and not answering the question OP posted ABOUT THE PANTHERS. This is supposed to be about football and this dork constantly tries to attack OP's question. Could you imagine someone in your real life group acting like this? You'd kick his butt out immediately. And you have this reddit loser trying to stop people for posting about the Panthers. Any normal person would just skip the post, but you have to remember these morons base their whole personality on their online persona. They would be banned almost everywhere else. Send him back to reddit, they will be a cancer to this place, trust me. I guarantee you he has more comments than 95% of accounts. These guys are the lowest in society so they live online. Its everything to them. You dont want that. Just read his responses. Do background check on that guy, there are younger people on this too and he probably isn't allowed to be talking to them, or be on here at all.
    • Neither of them are getting in. Cam had HOF potential but was squandered by Ron, Shula, and Gettlemen.
    • We have attempted several over the past two seasons. Maybe two successful?
