Why bring in a veteran QB?

i'd rather have pennington on the sidelines than favre at this point.

pennington is more of a player coach type of guy and he's got more to offer.

favre spent years doing his own thing. i'm not sure thats the type of guy that newton needs to be learning from. i'm sure that favre has a few worthwhile things to offer him, but i'm thinking that most of favre's talent was due to instinct rather than his being a student of the game.

For starters, nobody said anything about Favre being a back-up. Favre will get bored in retirement and this could be an opportunity for him to rehab his reputation as a diva and "me only" QB. Say what you want, but Favre can't be happy about how he is perceived by the fans.

As far as Pennington - I would love to see him here but Pennington is not going to be satisfied being a back-up and he will still demand top dollar. He would never come here.

Why bring in a Veteran?

I am encouraged that Cam is working so hard right now to be ready. That being said, taking the step from college QB to the NFL is hard. Its one of the hardest things a player, especialy a QB, can do.

Clausen was called 'the most Panther-ready QB in the draft' last year. He wasn't ready to take over the reins when Moore went down. He had no REAL QB coach, was forced to play behind a patch-work offensive line, had rookie WRs and a stud WR who was double covered, and teams packed the box to stop a running attack relying on its 3rd string RB (who DID do well). I keep bringing this up because it is important - Even Rivera said it was impossible to assess Clausen as a QB last season under these conditions.

Rivera and Fox are a lot alike in this way: After the 1-15 season, a season in which players QUIT, Weinke caught the entire blame. Fox came in the next year and wanted to erase even the MEMORY of that year. To do so, he kinda had to replace Weinke. Rivera is coming in after a 2-14 season with a QB who failed in a similar way and who can't really be accurately be assessed after that season. All the coach knows, though, is that he wants - like Fox - to start his new coaching era with his own QB, a QB HE drafts...and one who doesn't have '2-14' hanging around his neck like an albatross.

Although Clausen is a 2nd round pick, he is getting pushed aside/dumped faster than RB Shelton and WR Jarrett, 2 complete wastes. I think both Clausen and Newton could/would benefit from a Veteran coming in. I think both will benefot from Carolina finally having a REAL QB coach!

Whether the Vet starts ahead of Newton HAS to be based on the team's assessment of Newton. I would rather see Newton sit, like Rodgers at Green Bay, for a year or so and be ready to lead us to the SB than have him thrown in before he is ready and grinded down to having no fuutre/limited success.

meh....not really so. from everything i have read, he knows that his time is about up. he's not some egotistical diva.

Alright maybe not top dollar, but certainly will not be on the cheap. Last year his contract at Miami was for $2.5 million to sit on the bench and $5.75 if he starts. The average back-up in the NFL makes $1.5 million. I would say that is on the high end because you have a couple high dollar qb's that are back-ups making starter money because they didn't pan out. Once you back those guys out, around $800k - $1 million is the going rate. I doubt Hennington will play for that and I don't think the Panthers are going to be willing to pay much above average after we sink around $50 million into Cam.

The first 4 posts in this thread...are they serious?

Farve as a mentor?

He hasn't mentored anyone.

Who is going to be the backup? Clausen? I hope not.

We'd be one injury away from being worse than last year.

Ever since cam was drafted, logic has been thrown out the window around here.

Lemmings.

I think you took the posts about a back-up out of context. I don't think their is anyone here that thinks we don't need a vet back-up. The debate has been whether you get one that will compete to be the starter or one that is a career back-up. I vote on the career back-up.
