Why bring in a veteran QB?

Trying to change up the usual threads going around here. I understand the arguments 100% as to why we need a vet QB. Hear me out - it appears that most here want a vet QB to help mentor and coach Cam. I haven't heard anyone say that they want a vet QB to challenge Cam for the starting position. This wouldn't make any sense because we clearly have other needs to fill and dumping a lot of money on another QB when it is obvious Cam is our future. Seems like the coaching staff is favoring starting Cam from day one and this has been the trend as of the past couple years.

So my question: why bring in a vet QB to be a coach/mentor when we have Mike Shula? Isn't this his job.

It only makes sense to me to bring in a career back-up to serve as a back-up to Cam. If you think Cam isn't starting from day one you are fooling yourself.

Cam will start from day 1. Anybody who argues otherwise is wasting their time.

I don't think we need a vet to challenge him either.

I think the competition between Cam and Jimmy will suffice.

I would like to see us bring in Favre as a "consultant"/"mentor" to give him the best chance for success. Say what u want about Farve, but there's nobody who knows that position better than he does. You could argue Payton Manning but he's still active, so that's not an option.

I think bringing in Farve would be a good move and it would only help Mike Shula develop him faster!

Edit: Favre should never put on a Carolina uniform! Like I said just a consultant.

What does bringing in a guy like Favre say about our confidence in Mike Shula though? Or do you think it is one of those deals that players can talk to players differently than coaches can?

Seems most here want us to bring in a vet to compete and I don't understand that logic at all.

b/c you can't be dependent on a young QB to get everything he needs from a QB coach.......

perfect example is DeAngelo Williams who had a GREAT position coach in Carolina. The older vet who has seen it all was a noted asset to his game in Vinny T. Putting all your eggs in Shula teaching Cam everthing IMO ain't smart. Need that vet QB to relate with Cam about things that Shula might not get across.

I would rather see a cheap vet get killed this coming season then throw the very expensive rookie out there just to get mindf***ed and maybe ruin his career before it gets going.

I'm not saying don't play Cam at all. Give him a handful of plays a game but let the old vet take the pounding.

set of experienced eyes on the sidelines and voice in meetings. beyond that...i don't see a whole lot of need. my top choice is chad pennington.

of course we need a backup as well, but either clausen or moore would be able to handle that job.

most likely, newton will be starting early in the year if not from day one.

Who in the history of the NFL could make Cam feel better after throwing a pick? That's right... Brett Favre, the guy has that record. I think this would be very smart. He can be taught by a 20 yr veteran who has seen it all. Imagine Favre's insight and teaching him how to see thing through a player's eyes. Not to mention the fact that Cam would RESPECT him from the jump with just his resume alone. Favre wouldn't try to change his throwing motion or mechanics either. Just call the plays to him from the sideline, be a good mentor. I think this could be huge for our organization.

My point exactly, Clausen or Moore are going to be as good as any other back-up unless we could land a Mark Brunell type of guy. I would like to see us get a guy that use to be a starter that has seen his days pass and is content on being a back-up. This way we can show Moore the door.

Brett Favre is not going to be the backup QB on the panthers.

That is just laughable.

i could see him working with newton for a week and being someone that he talks to on a regular basis, but i don't envision favre ever wearing a panthers jersey.

maybe an ass't coach job like proehl has, but not much beyond that.

this. Why shouldn't we have one?

fellow players who are playing in the league still have a little more to offer as far as advice. Also as a mentoring role, hey I got here, you can do it too. Or, hey I noticed you did this when you were out there, next time make sure you do this. Or hey look at your foot movement, you aren't concentrating enough on that.

plus we need someone to go in and out of there with Cam. If Cam (god forbid, and we all know someone will egg my house for saying this) gets hurt or somehow has the inability to play, we need someone who is fairly trustworthy in there. I don't really trust Jimmy. Or Pike. I would trust Matty Mo but idk if he will even be here.
