Greg Cosell talks about Clausen

See, what I find weird about that is...

Didn't Gruden say (along with 99% of analysts) that Jimmy Clausen had the best mechanics of anyone in the draft last year? Their knocks on him were about his character... not his arm.

Clausen's mechanics have only one flaw that I've seen. Unfortunately, it's a rather large one.

His release results in a lot of low trajectory throws, i.e. passes that are more often knocked down and/or more easily intercepted.

Scherer was supposed to be a guy who could fix that. Obviously, he wasn't.

Batted passes were bad enough but I just couldn't stand the repeated.. throwing it away passes, I understand if someone's not open but lead the man open, try anyway might be surprised.

As Panther fans we have seen both ends of that spectrum and neither was pretty. In Jake we had a QB who never threw the ball away, in Jimmy we had a QB who seemed to excel in throwing it away. Neither was to my liking.

..... they took a flyer on him without doing a ton of research. had they done the research, they might have passed on him like every other team did, including a few that had big QB needs. it was a low risk gamble that didn't pay off and they are content to move on......

:iagree:

That is probably the biggest difference between Clausen and Newton. The front office went out of their way to make sure Newton was their man. I seriously doubt that the FO spent any time at all on Clausen. Our FO was shocked he fell that far and probably on the advice of Charlie Weis picked him up.

I like Clausen and think he may develop into a good NFL QB. I just don't think it will be with the Panthers. He might play a couple games and do well which would allow us some trade value. The QB job is Newton's to lose.

True, they probably did more research on The Golden Calf of Bristol than Clausen.

So you are saying they all had losing records as college QBs and there greatest win was against Hawaii (or similar irrelevant program)?

Nope.

Just saying that you don't have to win the heisman or the Rose Bowl to be a great QB.

You implied the opposite.

i implied Jimmy never accomplished anything in college. he didn't. he had a losing record and never beat a single team worth a hoot.

that is not implying you have to win a NC or Heisman.....Name a great QB who had a losing record in college and didn't have a single decent win in college?

having a winning record in college is very important. awards and championships are nice, but simply winning is more important. either they are used to it (which i want) or they are used to losing (which i don't want).

look at jay cutler. dude was 11-35 in college. he's 34-34 in the pros. he's got a better overall record, but has that translated to him being a winner? what happens when the pressure is on? there's just too many things to not like about either guy. you either win or you don't. QB is key to making that happen. it's their team and you can usually tell by the results.

One of the things that people dont realize about drafting Cam Newton is that, pending the whole lockout situation, is that with all of this... We're going to get a Jimmy Clausen coming into next season with a huuuuge chip on his shoulder. The drafting of this guy :cam: should motivate this guy :jc: to come out slinging!

Of course... his efforts will be futile.

WHy? If he comes out slinging why will the effort be futile?

I am tired of all this stupid Clausen bashing. I understand most of you now are cam lover Auburn fans, but this is a Panthers board and Clausen is a Panther. It's pathetic this fanbase judges of a rookie under last year's circumstances. If Newton sucks one year, will you guys ditch him like this? Why no hate for Pike? He sucked, haven't seen one thread on him and he played when our team actually helped a little.

Clausen will have a chip on his shoulder and I hope that motivates him to compete for the job. I will cheer him on like any other Panther and if that chip on his shoulder turns him into a better QB than Newton, he should start for the Panthers. It would be stupid to not want to see CLausen preforms under these new circumstances and better team oh and one full offseason in the NFL (hopefully), Clausen should be thoroughly tested, we did after all spend a second rounder.
