Greg Cosell talks about Clausen

Mr. Scot

I for one, have not given up on the guy. I just think its funny that all the Cam lovers are willing to give up on Clausen after 10 games, yet if Cam sucks it up in a full year of play they will say its not enough time to evaluate him. The double standards amuse me. :)

They've already begun prepping their defenses of him.

Lockout, new playbook, rookie, no vet, etc.

Cam will be allowed to hold this franchise hostage for a minimum of 3 years.

I think after 6 weeks (assuming we play), reality will set in. I promise you all that Clausen is not a bad QB. He will never be great, but tearing him down is childish and stupid. Again, John Elway threw for 47% as a rookie in as many games and had a lower passer rating and all of Denver hated him. I should not have to tell you how that turned out.

I can promise you that he is a bad QB.

You are wrong, I promise.

clausen showed no signs of growth last year. he doesn't have the confidence of the team at all. we only gave up a 2nd rounder for him. if the team thought that he could do the job, they wouldn't have spent a #1 overall on newton. if they had given up more to get him, they would have made a bigger deal about making sure he was given everything he needs to succeed.

truth is, they just aren't that impressed with clausen, and for good reason. they took a flyer on him without doing a ton of research. had they done the research, they might have passed on him like every other team did, including a few that had big QB needs. it was a low risk gamble that didn't pay off and they are content to move on. picking newton proves that they intend to move on from clausen.

is there a double standard? totally. a lot more will be expected of newton because of where he was drafted, therefore a lot more will go into making sure he gets all the developmental help he may need. he will also be given more time and patience than clausen to develop for the same reason.

because more is expected...newton busting will be far more harmful than clausen failing to the club, which is why newton will be given more tools and time (or more rope to hang himself).

all of the above might scare the timid onto running away, but fortunately hurney/rivera/chud/and shula all did their due diligence in checking this guy out and came to the conclusion that he was worth the risk. it's the type of swing for the fences approach that is needed to succeed in the league and that was lacking while fox was the coach.

I agree with the few on here that believes there is a double standard when comparing the qb situation last year and present. With that said I believe Cam has the better tool set, and will do better with this years situation, than Clausen was able to do with last years.

If after 341 NFL pass attempts.....Cam Newton has not gotten a single WR into the endzone.....I would not set a double standard for him. He would suck.

Exactly...If Cam duplicates a pickles-like season he will jeered and doubted...Warren Moon would even boo him!

Clausen was in a bad situation where Foxie was in a pissing match each week with the front office...It was a collective failure from the top down. However, Joey Harrington threw for 9 tds in his rookie year more than triple the JC output!

TRD's head will explode when I say this: I am not proclaining Cam a success but he has enough talent that if you drew plays with sticks in the dirt and had no playbook Cam would have more than 2 tds...

Claussen is a colossial disappointment and he just NEVER flashed anything!

At least with even a Jay Cutler you see a great couple of plays before the bone headed play.. Weinke had 300 yrd games... Claussen never broke 200 yrds!! Inexcusable and yes he has to show me he can do it!

Clausen had a very good Junior season in a more traditional offense. To try and compare the things Clausen and Cam did is idiotic at best.

I'm sick of defending Clausen but it's the truth.

When you look deeper into the numbers, neither Cam nor Jimmy were that impressive.

Cam stays in the pocket longer than Jimmy does, unless it is a designed run play for him. I wanna like Jimmy, but he has no pocket presence. He bails when there is no pressure, and gets crushed by actual pressure.

Clausen still did nothing.....did nothing his entire college career. Football is about winning at the end of the day. Only thing Clausen has ever done is beat up on less talented teams dating back to high school.....everything else is followed by excuses.

What Cam did was impressive unless you are a diabolical hater......he basically single handledly walked onto two teams and was the main reason for both National Championships. He walked onto an Auburn team that was at the bottom of the SEC and won it all......

Numbers lie......football is about winning. Cam wins. Too claim looking deeper into Cam shows what he did wasn't impressive might be the most absurd thing posted on this board in months.

Did you watch Notre Dame when he was there? He had a poor supporting cast overall.

Football is a team game. To judge Clausen college career soley on wins is naive.

Are you SERIOUS he had Kyle Rudolph who was one the best TE's who was drafted. And two NFL caliber WR's to say Clausen didn't have a supporting cast is a complete joke.

I said overall.

In 2009 ,he had a bad defence, bad running game, and inconsitent passing offensive line. People also heavily critisized Weis coaching.

The only thing they had going for them was a great passing offence thanks to Clausen, Floyd, Tate and Rudolph.
