Chris Weinke on WFNZ about training Cam

Hopefully they throw in Chris's game tape so he can learn what NOT to do. ;) Good notes! Awesome!

Great players don't usually make great coaches.

Worth remembering Ron Rivera was an "effort" guy. His playing career won't get him into the Hall of Fame (hopefully his coaching career will).

This would be a lot easier to read in paragraphs.

I'm optimistic, but cautiously.

We don't know what TD will be able to do after two knee surgeries.

Otah looks injury prone and doesn't spend enough time on the field.

Goodson is good, but DLo is elite. Goodson also seems to have a bit of a problem holding onto the ball.

Cam is a green rookie who hasn't shown anything or proven anything at this level. A lot of guys win in college and flop in the pro's. I'm not trying to predict what Cam will do, but I'm not going to tie myself to blind optimism because he won in community college and one year at Auburn. Chris Weinke won the Heisman and a National Championship too.

I'm taking a hopefully, yet "wait and see" approach to this season.

There are far too many hypotheticals for me to be comfortable.

i understand and i respect your point of view. But Cam Newton's Drive to be great (barring anytype of injury) he will be great.

i believe if you want to be great at anything you can achieve it and bnot only does he want to be great he has the physical tools to do so as well. D Wills has been elite but he's number two on our roster and i feel as if Stewart/Goodson at 75/25 would be just as productive as Stewart/Willliams at 55/45 (my opinion)

Im waiting and seeing too. but im looking for wins man im not condoning or representing moral victories. see Lions and and other losing fans say thing like " we won the last 4 games in a row to end the season." and the browns were saying the same thing the year before.

Panthers have always been a solid competitor since we got in the league and i want that to continue. if were bad next season im not looking for any excuses (besides injuries to major players) we were just bad. and hopefully we can get it together the following season.

see that kinda talk right there is what the lions browns bills and bengals organizations way of thinking. i been a Carolina fan since 93(when whispers of the team was coming and the establishment began) and i dont celebrate moral victories. if we dont compete im not cool with that. now i dont know about the Lombarbi next season but i definitly think we can win or atleast finish around .500

implementing a new offense, new defense, new special teams, rookie QB, young receivers (especially if Smitty bounces), key players who need to prove they can stay healthy..

I don't think pointing out other fan bases is really relevant to having to overcome those issues, grow as a team, and install a totally new philosophy to that team..

doesn't have poo to do with having a failure mentality.. If JR puts out a 2010 season 4 years in a row, then you could bring up those other fanbases if ours just rolls over handing JR that KY..

you can expect a .500 record, but if we only win 4, 5, or 6 games next year I'm not going to go around looking shocked..

btw, our fanbase doesn't have anything to do with our team winning games.. our coaches and players want to win championships despite what our fans think. Fans don't play the game.

oh, and glad to see new fans hitting the forums..

You could argue that Dorsey is more valuable when it comes to training for the Panthers (system experience).
i just listened to the whole interview here and from the way it sounds, dorsey's familiarity with chud's offense won't matter much...mainly because of the attention to detail that weinke has. it sounds like weinke is primarily the one working with him.

they are in the classroom for 1-2 hours in the morning learning a section of the playbook where newton has to hit the board and gets grilled on and where he asks lots of good questions. they take what they worked on in the classroom out on the field and has a defense lined up in front of him where weinke throws a lot of situations at him. newton has to call all his plays and read the defense. they are working on verbiage and have him call each play a few times before he ever runs it just to get him comfortable with it. they film everything and then they spend a lot of time watching it and reviewing what he did. then they do the whole thing over again in the afternoon.

not sure dorsey's involvement (or anyone's, tbh) would help out newton more than what weinke is doing with him right now. only way it could be better is if he was actually able to work with chud and shula.

I love the way the Weinke and Cam are approaching this. Studying...grilling onthe board...lining up in front of an actual defense...calling his own plays.

Seems they are really trying to cover all of the bases...learning the system and them making decisions on the field.

yep...ot's not nearly the same thing as what will be faced on a weekly basis during the season, but it sure is a step in getting him ready for it.

Sounds like Weinke is doing an outstanding job as a teacher and seems like he is auditioning for a future coaching position. Good for him and Cam.

I am really getting pissed at the lockout. I want Cam on the field with his new teammates to give himself and the Panthers the greatest chance of success as soon as possible. Looking forward to this NFL season more than any in a long time, so get the damn lockout over with already.

This actually my be better than if there was OTA going on right now. I think there are rules in place regarding how much practice/team whatever time before TC. This seems like Cam is getting tailor made tutoring that a lot of QB's coming in the league would not have gotten. IF he goes into camp looking great IMG looks like geniuses.

Sound like Killa Cam will be starting week 1, I guess they will trade Jimmy or cut his sorry ###. You would think Jimmy would be out there 12 hours a day. The question is why the reporters are not getting any information on Jimmy. That’s sad that you had a QB coach your whole life, and you still look like ####. “That’s too funny”

To all my HATERS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

You have to love Killa Cam for what he is doing right now. He is putting his self in the class of great QB’s. “Big up to the Carolina Panthers for making the right decision” This organization will have success with Killa Cam as there QB and you can take that to the bank.
