People need to demonize someone, that way it makes sense to them. They want the issue to be easy. If they can turn one side, or even a single person, into the 'bad guy' they create a perfect outlet for their frustrations over the issue.

There is nothing wrong with allowing a lawyer to lead the union in theory. But when the lawyer whom you have chosen to lead you has admitted that he went out of his way to meet Jimmy Hoffa's son and the president of the Steelworkers Union, you might have a problem. Smith apparently has some kind of God complex and has made this thing all about himself and his agenda. He wanted his name to go down as the man who "saved" the players union.

His approach of course ignored any possibility of a reasonable, negotiated settlement because that made less of a splash in the national headlines. He didn't get to put his ugly mug on TV for a year or more if he negotiated a quick deal. No one would remember who he was. So he ran into litigation because that was a perceived way to win the big victory which would etch his name into the NFLPA history books. Too bad it backfired.

Dumbass.

As for Fiz's repeated arguments that the players are being exploited by the owners, I just wish that my boss would exploit me that way as well. I'd take a minimum salary of $250,000.00 or whatever the practice squad guys make now and get "exploited" all day long. Is the NFL a monopoly? Of course it is. But I don't think for one minute that the players don't benefit from that monopoly as well. The lack of competition from other professional football leagues only results in even more success for the NFL. They are the only game in town and that obviously helps the players.
