comparing Cam to josh Freemon

So speed is irrelevant but you have to know when to use it? That makes no sense. And Cam ran what he was told to run at Auburn... often, it wasn't his choice to run first.

And FTR, Josh Freeman is not nearly as fast as Cam.

Cam did run what he was told to run at AU and the vast majority of his runs were designed runs. He really scrambled very little. There were very few passing plays all year where he tucked and run. I would say less than 10 out of hundreds of plays.

Also, I am not sure how many are aware of this, so I will point it out...

After the LSU game when Cam ran for almost 220 yards against the #1 rushing defense in the SEC (along with 198 against Arkansas and 188 against UK the two previous weeks), the Auburn coaches began to call games a bit differently as every team AU played made it their number 1 priority to focus on stopping Cam from running. Here is a breakdown of the second half of the season as far as Cam goes:

Ole Miss: 18-24 for 209 yards, 2 TD's, 0 Int. Only 11 rushes. Cam sat the 4th quarter as we were up about 30 points by then. In Oxford.

UTC: 15-21 for 317 yards, 4 TD's, 0 Int. 1 rush. All in the first half. Cam did not play a single possesion in the 2nd since AU was up 30+ at half.

UGA: 12-15 for 158 yards, 2 TD's, 1 int. The int was on a tipped ball that should have been caught. Another ball was dropped and one pass was thrown out of bounds. Almost a perfect day passing. 150 yards rushing.

Bama: 13-20 passing for 216 yards, 3 TD's, 0 int. Against maybe the best D in the country on the road.

SECCG: 17-28 for 335 yards, 4 TD's, 0 int.

Totals for final 4.25 games (he sat 3 full quarters): 75/108 (70%) for 1235 yards, 15 TD's and 1 Int.

I think Cam did pretty well throwing the ball when the AU coaches let him start throwing more down the stretch.

In 2 years Josh Freeman may be a top 5 NFL QB with his skill set. I'm not on his nuts, I'm just telling you the truth. The comparisons are legit...

I agree.I think the young man has a hell of a future.

I will be pleased if Cam looks as good as Freeman at that point in his career and thats meant to be a compliment..

I'd hope in time Cam will be a better QB than Freeman, if not were in trouble. I think if Cam puts his all into this chance to be the franchise guy, he'll be better than Freeman. Brees and Ryan are the QB standard in the NFC south now, and I'am sure Cam knows this. I hope Cam is hungry, but I think he'll be great if he has the right guys around him.

How can you say we are in trouble? I am not bashing Cam but but Josh stats look pretty good in comparison with other 2nd year QBS.Almost made the pro bowl his second year.Big Ben is the only qb in recent times that has done that.

According to Wikipedia.

"2009On November 8, 2009, Freeman started his first professional game at home against the Green Bay Packers. The Buccaneers won, ending an 11-game losing streak. He completed 14 out of 31 passes for 205 yards, 3 passing touchdowns, and 1 INT, including a fourth down touchdown pass to rookie Sammie Stroughter to take the lead, 31–28 late in the game. Freeman became the youngest quarterback in Bucs history to start and win his first game. On December 27, 2009 he led his Buccaneers to a 20–17 overtime win over the 13–1 New Orleans Saints preventing them from clinching the 1st seed in the playoffs for 1 more week.

2010Josh Freeman began the 2010 season as the starting quarterback. He started all 16 games of the season, the first since Brad Johnson to do so since 2003. On December 26, 2010, Freeman completed 21 of 26 pass attempts for 227 yards and 5 touchdowns against the Seattle Seahawks, matching a franchise record for touchdowns in a game. On January 1, 2011 Freeman completed 21 of 26 pass attempts for 255 yards and 2 touchdowns against the playoff bound New Orleans Saints. Both performances won him the FedEx Air Player of the Week. He led the team to a winning record of 10–6, barely missing the playoffs. He was also named as a alternate for the Pro Bowl.

Speed in the NFL though is irrelevant... especially at the QB position....its all about knowing when to use it....the reason Josh Freeman is a beast is because he can throw the ball and only runs when need be. With Cam at AUB, he ran if his first option wasn't open. That worries me. I'm not sure if Freeman did the same thing at KU, but he reads the defense now. I'm sure Cam can adjust though...if he can, watch out..

yeah man.. both of those statements couldn't be further from the truth..

speeds kills, you can't teach it. Cam did not run after his first option wasn't open.

That's what I thought too after watching 5-6 Auburn games this year...which is a big reason I REALLY did not want him here. Then I DVR'd several Auburn games that ESPNU replayed just prior to the draft, mainly because everyone was saying we would take him and I wanted to double check my general impressions, just in case. So after we took him, I re-watched the games with more of an eye on what he specifically does in order to know what to expect from him...or if my fear was warranted.

Well, what I found is that almost all of Cam's runs were clearly designed running plays and he actually rarely scrambled in the face of pressure or took off running if his initial target was covered. What really surprised me was how much patience Cam showed in the pocket and his willingness to wait on a receiver to get open. He was just athletic enough to keep the play alive long enough for his receiver to come free.

It's easy to say it jarhead. I could be wrong but one thing is for sure, the NFC south is loaded with QB talent. Freeman has done well, but Brees and Ryan are both franchise QBs. When Freeman has led the Bucs to the playoffs and Brees is watching from his couch, I might feel a little different.

Cam Newton wears pants and has mad swagga with mad flava yo....

Josh Freeman wears a too too, and thinks he's the next Elway...

Freeman has a "reputation" Cam has "Swagga"

Freeman has "experience"

Cam has "Hopes"

Only relevant comparision.....

Freeman is an NFL QB who has demonstrated the ability to be successful in the NFL.

Cam is a rookie who has never taken a snap in the NFL.

That is all.

So does that mean nobody has the right to compare Andrew Luck to any successful QB, until after he takes snaps in the league?

Pretty much.

Comparing skillset is one thing. We are starting to compare Cam to every pro-bowl QB.

Let the kid develop and play in the NFL before we anoint him anything more than a rookie QB with great potential and athletic skill.

As I saw both play live in college, it was obvious that Cam is more physically gifted in running talent. Cam is faster on his feet, has impossible balance for his size, seems to have eyes in the back of his head and Cam dishes out a lot of punishment to potential tacklers. Freeman simply eludes rushers if he can and extends plays. If Freeman takes any hit, he goes down. Cam runs slap over linebackers, knocking them flat on their backs and hands them back their mouth pieces. If you ever get a chance to see the 2010 Auburn/ LSU game or the Auburn/ Arkansas game, Cam runs slap over several players, including LSU super stud Patrick Peterson.

Freeman has very nice touch on his throws and seems to be a quick thinker with good vision beyond his experience level. They are a lot alike in this department. They both have the arm strength to make all the required throws.
