Norwood will play DE for Rivera...

I beg to differ. I saw Brayton crash inside and allow RB's to run right by him on the outside way too many times. Also, DE's don't have to be huge to play the run well.

You can blame Meeks for that. Everyone of our DEs did that way too often. Johnson was the only one who routinely demonstrated the strength and ability to recover and still make the play. It was something Pepper's could do as well. The fact is that Meek's scheme was always suspect against the outside run which was a fundamental flaw of his system.

No DC teaches their DE's to give up outside contain that easily. Brayton was constantly taken out of the equation on those outside runs. When he would come in for Peppers, I noticed that our opponents were running to his side a lot. There was a reason for that, and it wasn't the scheme.

I'll give you this, Brayton's experience playing LB may make him more valuable in Rivera's zone-blitz scheme when he is asked to drop back in coverage... he's the only DE we've got at the moment that has any significant experience playing in space like that.

I dont see him playing that far out IMO. Now I can see him being used as a DE in both formations.

In Meeks scheme, from what I observed, if the DE made an inside move, the linebacker had contain on that side. We didn't have the tackle slide out and fill the edge but instead they took an inside route as well to limit the damage in the middle. With a tight end taking out the strong side linebacker and the fullback taking out the strong safety, they had nothing but green in front of them. At any rate three or four yards was a given.

No DE says give up the edge but when you are lined up across from the tackle and you know you have to get pressure yourself because there isn't going to be a blitz, the focus is making a quick move one way or the other. It makes it easy to get ridden out of the play. There was no misdirection, no stunts, no overloads, nothing. We didn't have the personnel to dominate the line and make plays. Pretty basic and easy to exploit.
