ubuntu is a distribution of linux. It is a very polished, quite user friendly operating system that is easy to install, even for a large portion of computer novices. Its also pretty stable, and free. You can actually install it on a USB flash drive (providing the flash drive is bootable a good percentage are) and boot from the flash drive to try it out. You can also install it beside your windows operating system in a dual boot configuration if you want to hang on to windows.
